Trucks have always been popular, for the non-needers, with the stereotypical vroom vroom asshole people who love to peel out while people see their political bumper fuck clouded in black smoke as their scrotum hitch accessory sways during a fishtail.

I drive by trucks constantly and they're second only to sports car drivers as the resident fuckwads of the highway.

High end sports cars you mean. Medium and low tier ones are the standard on the road nowadays I feel. Sports mode on or gtfo, for some reason I get better mpg on sports mode than eco.

You have an STI too right? I think. But yeah, Sport mode for life over schea. Economy mode sucks dicks.

In regards to California, I mean we're all jerking our dicks off a little to hard I feel. I don't see how this bill is a recipe for success (with current tech trends and limitations, specifically the creation of electric batteries). I can't imagine it standing until 2045 anyways, and if it does it will only apply to certain counties. You're asking 100% of CA permanent residents to eventually invest in an electric vehicle within the next, just over 20, years? The average prices of vehicles are raising at a higher rate than CA median incomes and the price of electric vehicles is already higher than the median sales price of CA vehicles. You're going to see people flee the state due to insane price discriminations that are being forced upon them just for LIVING in the state.

I also think we grossly underestimate the truck market here. These douche bags you're all talking about account for over a third of the market and the classification of, "truck" vehicle sales accounted for 66.4% of total sales in 2017. That means full electric vehicles aren't even catering to 2/3 of the current market demand.

Nooo, optima 2016. Its not even really a "sports" car but the suspension feels different in different driving modes, and the automatic gear changes differently too. I once got it over 30mpg with late night city driving while in sports mode, but I can never break 25 mpg in eco. Beats the old '03 GS300 tho, which never broke past 22mpg even on the highway lol.

I have a pickup. Fuck you all.

Wife wouldn't let me put a deposit on a model 3. Truck made working on our first house a breeze.

The 15 WRX I had would sometimes get 41 MPG driving to work (living in AZ makes this a bit more feasible, insanely level roads) if I was able to hit mostly greens or if people werent dick heads in front of me and I could coast to red lights instead of having to hit my brakes because someone switched lanes last minute. The thing averaged nearly 28 MPG over its lifetime though. Pretty awesome. Ran 91 octane on it though so that’s a factor.

That reminds me I should probably fill up tonight before the price hikes keep hitting between now and the weekend.

We're talking about a target 27 years away. There will be lots and lots of electric truck options by then.

But to the idea that this is a dramatic and disruptive change, you're right.

It's also necessary, not just for California but for the rest of the world to undergo this change. Climate change is here, and humanity has to do things differently.

Alternatively we could just continue to emit carbon by the gigaton, show our grandchildren a 7-9 degree C increase in global temps, and then die out with a final chapter full of mass migration, famine, and war.

Hey fuck you buddy I have a truck too. We can still bash the "I don't need a truck but I think they look cool" crowd. If you don't need a gas guzzling truck don't get one. If you need one for work or life awesome! I wish I didn't need a truck or could afford to buy a third vehicle so I could have a more fuel efficient daily driver but that isn't the case.

I get what you’re saying but they’re giving a time line to solve more problems than just everyone purchasing a vehicle (that currently can’t be produced at the rate necessary to even provide the minimum demand of this legislature, due to battery inefficiencies and raw material limitations). They have to not only solve the problem of the battery but once that’s done, make enough cars for everyone in 27 years, at a price they can afford in 27 years which... I mean dude. The required proportionate amount of spending for some households that would be necessary to purchase this vehicle would eliminate their ability to pay rent or mortgage (which is also raising faster than the wage rate). There’s a shit ton of problems standing in the way for this to come into fruition and they’re giving it a 27 year time frame.

It’s very possible that the battery issue doesn’t get solved for another decade. Then what? These are great ideas, I guess, if you’re into the earth and all that stuff, but what has CA actually done to show that they have the necessary plans in place to make this even remotely achievable? Signing a paper doesn’t mean shit.

I think you’ll see more people move away and come to more affordable states, that will hurt CAs ambitions even further.

It's going to require a lot.

It has to. We've dragged out feet for too long.

People talk about how the massive government efforts we need to solve climate change are like the ramp up to the mission to land on the moon.

But the effort required is more like the ramp up to fight WWII.

It's not just about "being into the earth" - it's about taking the absolutely massive effects of climate change that we will experience in our lifetimes seriously.

Things are going to get really fucked up between now and when we are playing with our grandkids. We need to put out foot on the accelerator.

You're entirely correct that we don't know the full contours of how a post-ICE civilization will work. But that's where we have to go, so we'd better start figuring it out.

Also remember, virtually none of the cars on the road right now are going to be on the road in 27 years. 10 years from now (17 years until the goal) there are going to be electric (and maybe hydrogen fuel-cell) vehicles in all shapes and sizes, and they will be competitively priced with ICE vehicles - perhaps cheaper than, or cheaper when you consider fuel savings. If you still buy an ICE vehicle 10 years from now...well...that's still 17 years from the (hypothetical) ICE ban. Most vehicles don't last 17 years either. And when 2038, 2040, 2042 are rolling around, in California at least, they probably won't be selling ANY ICE vehicles in the state, just phasing out the ones that still exist.

Yes, they'll need cheaper, more energy-dense, lighter batteries - hopefully using different more common anode/cathode materials than nickel and cobalt. It's 27 years away - battery tech 27 years ago was absolute trash. And the economic incentive for manufacturing firms to develop these batteries is through the fucking roof with the amount of demand for them. That's what this executive order does - it hangs a lamp on the goal, and tells the organs of government and industry to figure out how to get there.

The biggest hurdle I see for California and its lofty goals is the housing crisis is going to continue to get worse and it will eventually hinder efforts like this. California is going to have to figure out a way to minimize the financial impact that changes like this have on everyone so we can afford to still have a house while ditching anything that burns fuel. For some people even a couple thousand dollars can make a big difference in their lives.

While SB827 failed, I think bills similar to it will eventually succeed and significantly increase urban densification and housing supply - resulting in less commuting miles needing to be driven and more appealing rollout of mass transit.

This is both extremely necessary and extremely daunting.
in the quiet words of the Virgin Mary, wowie. a really extraordinary historic development, it represents what would be by far the most ambitious effort to combat global warming in human history and that being undertaken by what is now the 5th largest economy on earth (suck it Britain).
