These shouldn't exist and should be obliterated by zoning reform

Best way to combat automobile proliferation and carbon emissions is to make an urban context that doesn't rely on it. Whatever, this is a step in a right direction but not the one I am interested in.

Don't get me started on heating and cooling costs of buildings.

Thinking that areas like that exist only because of zoning restrictions.

Do you think that eventually only the ultra super mega wealthy should be able to live outside of extremely densely populated areas? I think you are vastly over simplifying the issue here. And I think it is one worth considering to its fullest because it is going to become a big enough problem where it will impact every other consideration being made in California.

Turning back the rising tides caused by global warming is a lesser task than removing Americans from their cars and sprawl.

The unmet housing demand is in the cities as it is, because that's where zoning squeezes supply while the jobs people want to work exist there. Sure there's some talk about zoning reforms in the suburbs and whatever, but obliterating the single family house neighborhoods in major cities (e.g. 80% of land zoned for housing in Los Angeles is zoned for single family housing only) is the largest of the hurdles.

This is going to happen and people will hate it, so Democrats will lose power in CA and we will slip a bit backwards.

Republicans will have to turn away from being the party of white supremacy first though - so it's a race to see what happens first.

Democrats will never lose power in California (barring a slavery/segregation style switch), especially with the state becoming increasingly Hispanic and Asian.

also think people are underestimating 1) how proud the majority of Californians are to be seen as progressive leaders, unlike (read: better than) the rest of the country or even the world, and 2) how profitable the green economy already is, but, more importantly, how profitable it shall become. the first companies to develop and mass market products and technologies that are low/neutral-carbon while being economically viable are going to see any initial investments pay off exponentially as they sell those goods and services to the rest of the country and thence the rest of the world. these types of central mandates will encourage California to become the locus of the environmentally sound energy movement that will reshape huge swaths of the global economy through social pressure and market dynamics, just as we became the home of the high tech revolution that has given Silicon Valley more millionaires than Manhattan. in sum there is money to be made and those first across the goal line shall make the most. Tesla is only the beginning.

    Model 3 Performance > M3

    That's an easy swap.

If in 2020 we elect a Democrat and they inplement some kind of carbon-penalized VAT, CA is going to look pretty smart.

If we continue fumbling around at the national level and Republicans hold out long enough that Californians feel the economic burden of the state's mandate that they all switch to driving luxury vehicles, we will see.

Anyone who gets a foothold in the green car + energy/energy storage industries in California will have one heck of a head start. Those that don't invest in this market are shutting themselves out to a huge swath of consumers who - after spending more than half their income on housing + outstanding loans - have a lot of purchasing power. Big reason why car companies are already in with electric cars. It's only going to grow and I think Oregon and Washington will not be that far behind. Nevada - particularly Vegas, Tahoe, and Reno - will also have to invest in electric car infrastructure to woo California weekenders.

In short, big neon sign to businesses and investors to get into developing applicable technologies + cars now to make long term profits. Heck, if some entrepreneurs solve overnight energy storage of solar energy, the duck curve will die resulting in weaning off natural gas power plants.

Not a shitty attitude just a perspective that isn’t being shared within the jerk circle that is happening over the current legislation passing. I’m all about moving to natural (free) energy and relinquishing the need of combustion engines but the fact that this is happening in the state of CA specifically doesn’t seem realistic at all. Like I said signing the paper doesn’t mean shit. It doesn’t even mean you’re devoted to making it happen. The state has so many larger hurdles to leap before it can make any substantial change without sending the general population of the city into more of a financial disaster than most residents are already in.

CA won’t meet their goal. Smaller states, maybe, but CA nah. And that’s not a bad attitude about it. That’s just a realistic projection of what is and isn’t attainable.

I'm telling ya, molten chlorides. Though it's certainly still not without its issues, such as corroding the container and other materials at some higher temperatures.

I have more faith in California here with renewables than I do it rolling out rec weed, so I'm sure they'll be fine. It's honestly pretty damn difficult for any of us to imagine 2045 super well. One needn't be all cocksure negative about it.

I think the housing situation is CA a very easy solution with a very tough implementation. Telling NIMBYs to eat cocks and change height restrictions and zoning laws, especially in SF, is as high hurdle. Hopefully it happens.

Even if CA only gets to 50%-75% of this actually happening by 2045, they will have actively tried to not be polluting cunts in a meaningful way. That's a pretty great place to start.

Yeah, I just don't share AG's optimism that CA won't take another Republican turn. They have multiple R house reps, elected Ahnohld, Reagan, etc. There is a lot of liberalness there, but there is also a lot of money (that dislikes taxes) and I think a late 90s Republican might have a statewide shot if this goes poorly.
