Apparently basically all asphalt roofs sold here are already Class-A fire resistant (don't burn for two hours in a wood-based structure fire) so it's just people being fancy or having very old wood-shake roofs that get lit up by the embers.

(Unless you get unlucky and they get sucked into a vent or set a tree right next to your house on fire)

It is a combination of what you said and also people not clearing out firewood or other flammables from around their house and having very flammable siding too. You need to make sure flames can get up underneath your house as well as protecting it from the top. Make sure your decks are safe.

We just replaced the roofing on our house with metal roofing and are in the process of replacing the old redwood siding with hardie board siding which is a concrete fiber board. Also we have the goats down the bank clearing out the ground brush. It is tough but you do what you can when you live in a forest.

These measures help keep your house safe from flying embers but if the fire roars up to the house there isn't much you can do to prepare for that.

Idk if any of you have watched some of the videos popping up on YouTube or LiveLeak of the aftermath with people's skeletons in their cars... Friend described it as metal as fuck and I honestly don't have a better way to put it.

Yeah not sure if they still are but back in the first day or 2 various responders were hitting the roads and telling people to just leave their cars to burn if they didn't want to burn with them and go on foot. So have run into a few people who were able to actually survive doing that but yeah lost all the things they tried to save

I was talking to someone from OES that was telling me part of the cause of the traffic jam that resulted in people being stuck in their cars is because people fleeing the fire were obeying traffic laws. If you are evacuating a fast moving dangerous fire like that don't stop and wait for the lights to change to green, just go.
