Ya. Technology couldn't possibly evolve over 300 years.

Maybe I'm really tired, but this part confused me.

If they produced more than we ever will, how is our annual rate higher and how does that put us on track to have the same effect in 300 years if we can't even produce that same level of carbon dioxide?

Yea this bit doesn't really make sense, either poor wording or he misinterpreted something in the report.

The only explanation I could think of (my own conjecture, nothing from the article) is that the warming due to the CO2 from volcanic eruptions was mitigated by dust and ash in the atmosphere blocking sunlight.

Burning fossil fuels doesn't have that effect, so potentially you could get a similar increase in temperature with less CO2.

Sink processes (like photosynthesis) are constantly removing CO2 from the atmosphere, so every year you get:

Amount of CO2 increase = Amount Emitted - Amount Absorbed

So if Amount Emitted by sources is higher and Amount Absorbed by sinks doesn't scale up enough to compensate, you get more CO2 in that atmosphere.

Releasing a small amount more than normal (volcanos) for a long period of time may eventually get you to the same place as far as CO2 concentration in the atmosphere, but you can get there much faster if you make the gap between them bigger. So yeah, the net amount of CO2 released by volcanos over 5,000 years may be larger than the amount we would get if we burned all known fossil fuel reserves, but that CO2 wasn't released in 300 years.


Sinks can scale up to compensate. With higher CO2 in the atmosphere, you do get more plants (and thus more CO2 pulled out of the atmosphere), the ocean takes up more (ocean acidification), etc., but there is a limit (and we are deforesting.) In a Precambrian era, the compensation mechanisms weren't also being pressured and they weren't making up as large of a gap.

I read one time that we will use up all our fossil fuel deposits, that we know of, in 250 years. I doubt humans will still be using such antiquated technology by then though.

In an environmentally historic vote, the European Parliament has moved to ban single-use plastic products across Europe. This ban outlaws plastic bags, straws, plates, cups, drink stirrers and cotton swabs.

The European Parliament voted 571-53 in favor of the single-use plastics ban. The ban is wide-ranging and will have a major impact on consumers and retailers alike. Erin Simon, director of sustainability at the World Wildlife Fund, said the ban is cause for celebration — and caution.

"A rapid pace of innovation and proliferation of plastic has outpaced our ability to manage it," Simon said. "When this plastic ends up in nature, it doesn't break down quickly. It takes hundreds of years. That has really bad impact on those ecosystems and of course the people who depend on those. That's wildlife and humans."

The EU ban aims to eliminate single-use plastics within two years, and Simon hopes it might lead other countries like the United States to follow suit.
