It's state capitol was shut down over the weekend because militia & patriot groups threatened to march against democrats and provide armed support for republicans.
The Republicans finally returned to work, allowing the Oregon bill legalizing 4-plexes on every residential lot in larger cities and duplexes on basically every residential lot in the state.

You might not think this is climate-related, but housing density is one of the best ways to reduce per-capita emissions. Lots of add-on effects for commutes, heating/AC efficiency, etc.

Big fan of this. Density and diversity of housing types are exactly what a socioeconomic diverse neighborhood needs. They will need to come back soon to alleviate deconversions en masse through minimum zoning standards (if that wasnt taken care of in this bill).

Iceland wrote a letter to the future on its glacier memorial. -- 415ppm CO2

Ok is the first Icelandic glacier to lose its status as a glacier.
In the next 200 years all our glaciers are expected to follow the same path.
This monument is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done.
Only you know if we did it.

A science team out of Zurich has determined that adding 1.2 trillion trees to the planet will undo the last 25 years of CO2 release. So far in the last decade nations have added about 17 billion new trees so massive government and NGO effort would be needed to plant 1.183 trillion trees in time to make a difference.

Assume a 0.5ft radius ~28,000 sq miles of trees. That doesn't account for any spacing or width of branches or anything.

    Uhhh.

Mass tree planting would be one of a hundred things we need to do if we ever get around to taking climate change seriously. That article suggesting it is a silver bullet was bad and dumb.

Also Russia alone is 6.6 million square miles, 28k sq mi. is a huge area but not compared to, ya know, earth.

The article I read didn't imply it was a silver bullet though I wouldn't be surprised if others following it did. The initial report made explicit that this is a solution that would need to be done in concert with all current emissions-reducing activity because otherwise the carbon capture would be irrelevant by the time the trees hit maturiry.

Also the US, Canada, China, Russia, and Australia have enough usable land between them to add a trillion trees.

Yea but he only figured a small spacing not including canopies. If we use a average forest density of 60 trees per acre, with 640 acres in a square mile, it seems closer to 30 million square miles.

Our annual tree deficit is currently ~10billion a year. We have a long way to go to first plant a net gain in a year.

Then we can plant another 1.2 trillion trees.. and defend the amazon, rezone and rebuild our cities, dismantle automobile dependence, redefine agricultural practices, build nuclear energy plants, usurp hydrocarbons, eat crickets, nix flying, and ride bicycles.

Pine trees capture a lot of carbon and don't have huge canopies, though granted I have no idea how many parts of the world pine trees successfully grow in.

This is purely conservative numbers ONLY considering trunk diameter. Literally the lower bound.

In reality it would be a few hundred thousand sq. miles to millions and that is a big ask.

Since the US, Russia, and Canada were identified as 3 of the biggest areas with open land to plant new growth then we could definitely get a few hundred billion pines going.
