I've been banging this drum for over 7 years now, but sanity may prevail - they're seriously looking at extending Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant (that provides 6% of California's electricity) for another decade, instead of the pointless planned shutdown in 2024/2025.

ignorance and irrational gut reaction mostly. they connect nuclear power to nuclear weapons and meltdowns, have a fear of contamination an order of magnitude or two greater than its danger warrants, and view waste storage as a defilement of the environment. at this point it's simply been ingrained in leftist politics since the 1960s/70s that nuclear is bad, long before there were serious concerns about global warming in mainstream conversations. five decades of fearmongering.

I feel like Yucca Mountain wasn't an awful idea and could have gone some way to assuaging fears.

Democrats are coming around on nuclear (as the older generation relaxes its grip on the party). Billions of dollars of the IRA are going towards nuclear.

It may have assuaged some fears but the fears were never based in reality in the slightest. Nuclear waste from commercial power plants in America harms exactly 0 people a year. It just sits there, in solid fuel assemblies encased in concrete dry cask storage, doing nothing. It can't explode and takes up little space because it's so energy dense, usually on the site of the plant itself.

The U.S. could see a new 'extreme heat belt' by 2053
A new report uses hyperlocal data and climate projections to show that cities as far north as Chicago could have many more days of extreme heat each year.
An "extreme heat belt" reaching as far north as Chicago is taking shape, a corridor that cuts through the middle of the country and would affect more than 107 million people over the next 30 years, according to new data on the country's heat risks.

The report, released Monday by the nonprofit research group First Street Foundation, found that within a column of America's heartland stretching from Texas and Louisiana north to the Great Lakes, residents could experience heat index temperatures above 125 degrees Fahrenheit by 2053 — conditions that are more commonly found in California's Death Valley or in parts of the Middle East.

Considering it hit 121°F/49.5°C within Los Angeles city limits 2 years ago, it's already here.

Why can't we take the water from the places with too much and bring it to the places with too little?

What if we just put a bunch of sponges in the water and they soak up the water and then point heaters at them to evaporate the water
