One of the few issues where I strongly disagree with Bernie Sanders is on nuclear power. If we aim to reduce or eliminate our dependence on oil, nuclear energy is essential. While accidents can happen, stringent regulations and robust redundancies can mitigate these risks to almost zero. We are still hundreds of years away from relying solely on solar and other renewable energy sources.
its ominously leaking glowing green goo and there's barrels and barrels of it turning our forests and rivers into a hellscape
I've seen what happened to Springfield. We don't need more of that water polluting, 3-eyed fish mutating, unclean energy in our country.
Unless you're trying to tell me that The Simpsons isn't an accurate portrayal of nuclear power and its environmental impacts.
Hey. We’ll suffer no Blinkey slander here.
https://www.nbcnews.com/science/envi...ded-rcna163262Sunday was the hottest day ever recorded on Earth, according to data from the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service.
The average global temperature reached 17.09 degrees Celsius, or about 62.76 Fahrenheit, which is just above the record of 17.08 C set on July 6, 2023.
“We are now in truly uncharted territory and as the climate keeps warming, we are bound to see new records being broken in future months and years,” Carlo Buontempo, the director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service, said in a statement.
So far, July of this year and July 2023 were both much hotter than the average from 1991 to 2020, according to Copernicus data. Before last year, the hottest day ever recorded was Aug. 12, 2016, when the average temperature reached 16.8 degrees.

Somebody tell me how it is 72 degrees outside, 95% humidity and raining but the pressure is still 30.10Hg? >.>; Is my barometer broken?

Must be higher pressure somewhere else around you pushing those rain clouds to you lol. I'd kill for some wind in South Florida, were baking in the high 90s, feels like it's closer to 110F.

Denver AQI is like 160 all week, really it’s fine
Humid and horrible in San Diego even on the beach. When we going to Mars?
I dunno if the earthquake will be strong enough to send Cali that far
Interesting development

For those of you in California, how are you feeling about the government's/emergency response team's response to these fires?
It's hard to tell on TV since all the TV shots are fire porn, there is very little being said about responses on a local/neighborhood level. Some shots of the water tankers/helicopters dropping water too.
The first responders did what they could considering the strongest winds I have ever witnessed. People were complaining about the lack of air assets from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday midday. There were gusts upwards to 100mph that grounded everything. The only thing the firefighters could do was wait it out until the winds calmed down and finally deploy assets.
The low death toll across all fires speaks to the initial mission of life preservation on Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning. Then the mission switched to property protection and containment. And any new fires (Hollywood Hills & Kenneth Fires) was followed by a swift deployment to ensure further fronts don't tax resources further.
I can't complain about the government response. Within 6 hours a county and state level state of emergency was declared. Biden promised federal aid that same day as he was in town for a now-rescheduled/cancelled National Monument commemoration.
I feel like the response has been well managed in an impossible situation, the communication has been overwhelmingly clear and accurate.
The problem is everything leading up to this disaster (complete lack of forest management, far too little infill housing development, messed up insurance market), not the response itself.

Firefighters are doing work, budget cuts to the fire department weren't that huge but it was still a budget cut while tossing heaps more $$ to the LAPD and other policing bullshit. Watched a vid of one of the planes that was able to drop water while the wind was gusting and holy shit, soon as it dropped the plane was just getting pushed around all over the place. Glad it didn't go down.
We've had 2 or 3 fires pop up here in San Diego area in Imperial Beach and El Cajon so far but thankfully winds haven't been bad at all here.
