The LAFD 'budget cuts' are a lie - there was basically two funding sources last year in an anomaly because they were in negotiations with the union during that period, you need to add them together to see the full budget increased by 53M, not decreased by 23M as some reported.

U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright has stated that global warming is a trade-off of a modern economy. The Trump admin will going all-in on oil, gas, and coal as the "cure" (solar and wind) was more "destructive than the disease".

He said that oil, gas and coal were crucial to the global economy and that future energy demand growth was unlimited.

He said the policies that had been implemented by Biden to combat global warming were not effective, including efforts to expand zero-emissions solar and wind power, and encourage the adoption of electric vehicles.

The U.S. on Monday approved an extension of Delfin LNG's exports of liquefied natural gas to big economies in Asia and Europe, one of a series of approvals the administration has done after Biden paused LNG export approvals for about a year to study the economic and environmental impacts of the booming business.

Look at the bright side our generation probably won't have to deal with the coming environmental meltdown and if you were smart and didn't have kids you got nothing to worry about.

a dozen times we polluted a river on fire and then eventually sought environmental regulations. we have no memory

    edit: a dozen times

Yes how dare people take solace in the fact that they won't have to suffer the consequences of the ravaging of the environment that they are powerless to stop.

AI datacenters, at their current rollout, are projected to create carbon emissions equal to ~10M cars and use as much water to cool them as the annual use for ~10M households.

Projections for AI’s resource consumption and carbon emissions already paint a grim picture. A new study published Monday in the journal Nature Sustainability shows that AI server deployment across the U.S. could produce 26 million to 48 million tons (24 million to 44 million metric tons) of carbon dioxide equivalent per year between 2024 and 2030—equal to putting 5 to 10 million new cars on the road.

On top of that, the researchers expect AI to consume roughly 193 billion to 297 billion gallons (731 million to 1,125 million cubic meters) of water per year, as much as the annual household water usage of 6 to 10 million Americans.
    https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-in...i-cant-plug-in

Microsoft says the US doesn't have electricity infrastructure to power all of their available AI GPUs.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said during an interview alongside OpenAI CEO Sam Altman that the problem in the AI industry is not an excess supply of compute, but rather a lack of power to accommodate all those GPUs. In fact, Nadella said that the company currently has a problem of not having enough power to plug in some of the AI GPUs the firm has in inventory. He said this on YouTube in response to Brad Gerstner, the host of Bg2 Pod, when asked whether Nadella and Altman agreed with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, who said there is no chance of a compute glut in the next two to three years.

“I think the cycles of demand and supply in this particular case, you can’t really predict, right? The point is: what’s the secular trend? The secular trend is what Sam (OpenAI CEO) said, which is, at the end of the day, because quite frankly, the biggest issue we are now having is not a compute glut, but it’s power — it’s sort of the ability to get the builds done fast enough close to power,” Satya said in the podcast. “So, if you can’t do that, you may actually have a bunch of chips sitting in inventory that I can’t plug in. In fact, that is my problem today. It’s not a supply issue of chips; it’s actually the fact that I don’t have warm shells to plug into.” [Emphasis added]

Nadella's mention of 'shells' refers to a data center shell, which is effectively an empty building with all of the necessary ingredients, such as power and water, needed to immediately begin production.

China is testing a wind-powered and ocean-cooled datacenter.

Powered entirely by wind energy, the initiative has a total power capacity of 24 megawatts. According to the Lin-gang management committee, its completion represents a key breakthrough in incorporating renewable energy into data storage, processing, and distribution.
By submerging servers beneath the surface of the ocean where seawater acts as a natural cooling system. This reduces the energy demand for cooling to less than 10 percent.

The industry-standard metric for measuring the energy efficiency of a data center is PUE (power usage effectiveness). The UDC’s first phase is designed to achieve a PUE of no more than 1.15, a remarkable goal considering theoretical perfection is 1.0.

The project is environmentally sustainable in other ways. More than 95 percent of its electricity comes from offshore wind turbines. Overall, the designers estimate that this reduces energy consumption by 22.8 percent. Huang Dinan, president of Shenergy Group, another of the project’s contractors, noted that the East China Sea offers unique offshore wind resources with more than 3,000 hours of annual utilization. Land usage is reduced by more than 90 percent, a major factor in densely populated coastal cities like Shanghai, and the need for fresh water is eliminated entirely.

A data center being built in Pennsylvania will require as much power as it currently takes to power all of Philadelphia.

The EPA will no longer consider the human impact when setting pollution limits. They will only consider the impact on businesses.
