The question over whether to ban it has been ongoing throughout the community.

Make no mistake, it's a game-breaking combo. The problem is not that it kills a character; there will almost certainly be non-infinite 100% combos in this game's lifespan. The problem isn't even that you can't counter-switch out, or that it doesn't require meter. The problem is that it's easy, boring, and takes FOREVER to kill. In the offline-console era, web-reality-web would have to face a hard ban, or the game wouldn't be worth playing.

The thing that's confusing to me is how this combo is even possible. Reality surge and web ball both ignore HSD, which seems dumb but whatever. But why isn't there a trigger on multiple capture states, or at least multiples of the SAME capture state? And why isn't undizzy triggering after 20 reality surges or 20 web balls? The undizzy system should have prevented this from jump.

edit: That last video explains it: undizzy literally only applies to LP. It should be applied to everything.

because the QA budget was probably a tiny fraction of the meager resources they devoted to the game's aesthetics

I doubt the budget had anything to do with it. I mean, no one criticizes MVC3's budget or production values, and yet we got this infinite 3 days after release:

And a couple of weeks later, we got this gem:

My criticism is not so much that infinites would be found, as they are inevitable in Marvel. It's more that they seemed to have a solid system in place to prevent (or limit) them, but for whatever reason they chose to apply it only to LP.

I think almost every new era (post '09) capcom fighting game had some sort of infinite. Akuma in vanilla sf4, the ones Dan showed, Tron Bonne had a hidden infinite that got made public at the end of MvC3's life before UMvC3 released. Kazuya in SFxT. So this wouldn't surprise me tbh.

Been gone for awhile, how does the game stack up so far other than the obvious aesthetics?

If it were a $20 game, I'd say it is worth it. It is an absolute joke that the game costs $90+ for the upcoming DLC characters. Everyone realized that and hardly anyone bought it or they got a refund.

I feel like how good it plays now might be irrelevant with how poorly it's selling and how quickly the player base is already dwindling.

Pretty soon it'll be like UNIEL players standing in the Westgate with a cardboard sign looking for casuals.

I'm not sure it is even going to have enough $ behind it from game sales or DLC sales to even have a Capcom Pro Tour backing in 2018. If it does, it may be a small amount like $20k total pot. If it does somehow have a big pot (lol @ whoever signed that contract before release) in 2018, it will be non-existent in 2019.

UNIEL getting screwed for P4A2 not-even-2.0 was a fucking crime.

And then it turned out 2.0 was kusoge as fuck.

considering DLC sales are a function of base game sales and necessarily have to be smaller than the total number of copies sold, i think this one is safe to call DOA. even if every single person who bought the game also for some reason paid for 5 season passes, they'd probably still be well short of the prerelease sales targets.

Some reviewers are saying it's an extremely fun game, while others are complaining that it's just another crap laden 50/50 fest.

I mean, at the end of the day every fighting game is going to boil down to 50/50 or rock/paper/scissors situations. "Professional" reviews for fighting games are almost always garbage because a reviewer is never going to put in the time to really understand the game.

If you're on the fence about playing it, grab it on Steam and give the game a spin. Just keep it under 2 hours if you decide you want get a refund (like I did).

How large is the game? 2 hours would probably give something like an hour of lab time before the return process needs to be started?

It's 2 hours of playtime or 14 days from purchase for a Steam refund, whichever comes first.

The game plays very well. The most valid criticism I've seen offered is that zoning isn't good enough, which is highly relevant to me personally but is not really a drawback to the playerbase at large. But as far as freedom and creativity, this game is everything reasonably informed people expected.

As far as all the sky-is-falling sales numbers go and the impact you can expect them to have on the competitive scene, you should a) ignore sales from places that are not USA because those places have never cared about Marvel to begin with and b) consider the sales levels of the last Marvel game (UMVC3) and how they affected tournament turnout.

The fact that Evo isn't headlined by MKX should tell you a good deal about how sales translate into tournament entries.

My recommendation is pretty simple: if you were a (non-Morridoom) UMVC3 player, get this game. If you weren't, don't. If you were playing non-Morridoom in UMVC3 then you're probably a rushdown player (or: you didn't mind losing), and this game is manna from the heavens for rushdown gameplay. If you're a MVC2 player and you didn't play 3, the reasons that kept you from playing 3 will probably still be present.
