Cornyn is saying he has the 50 votes without Flake and Corker. Collins still says she’s not to yes, yet. So, weird shit. I have to assume Corker won’t get a damn thing he was wanting since it would be impossible to make up a trillion dollars and reconciliation rules won’t allow a rollback of the tax cuts. Which means they have to have Collins and will probably give her pretty much anything at this point.

Life begins at conception per the bill. But the bill isn’t overturning Roe v Wade. It’s fluff. And not the first time we have passed laws giving rights to unborn fetuses. It’s just a page that’ll be popular with the base and largely meaningless.

Also, Collins got three amendments in the bill. One for a SALT deduction up to $10,000, a medical tax deduction threshold reduction, and allowing people to make retirement catch-up contributions. She also secured a promise from McConnel and Trump to pass legislation to stabilize healthcare markets, which even if they actually followed through (lol), will be almost impossible without a mandate. There’s your 50 votes.

It passed in a tax bill to begin 521 plans for unborn fetuses. Which we could previously do, we just had to open the 529 in the guardians name and transfer once the baby was born. I think the reality of this provision doesn't really warrant the fear-mongering. It's not going to lead to an abortion ban or anything. It doesn't aim to change any current abortion legislation or codify legal precedent.

Jeff Flake is now a yes after securing a promise to bring DACA to the floor.

I assumed that Dems would use DACA as a chip for funding the government. But it looks like Flake did it for them. And I thought they'd use market stabilization as well, but Collins did that for them. I wonder what chip they'll play now.

Remember when democrats whined they couldn't get anything because they needed sixty votes for everything and insist on playing by the rules.

We should stand in awe of the republicans' ability to shove as much as they can through reconciliation. And even then needing the presidency to do it.

Well, the theory is that the GOP expects to get absolutely crushed in 2018 and with the potential Alabama Dem coming in a week, they need to move quickly to shove anything down the throat of the country. With reconciliation gone and potentially losing the house and possibly the Senate next year, they need to squeeze everything they can into this bill.
