Hill is fucking lit this morning. Arrived at 8 to an old dude at the top of the metro holding a sign that said "enjoy your vote to kill people". When I left he had been replaced by dudes dressed as squirrels with signs about the ahca that ended in "are you nuts".
Anyway as of this morning people are still split about whether or not it passes the house later today. Had breakfast with a Dem rep and he is very excited for the vote.
Seems like Republicans lose either way.
They want so badly to do this on the 7th anniversary of ACA that I could see them just trying to ram this through, but with all the outside groups (Heritage, Kochs) against this and with how easily any HFC district Republican will be targeted if they vote for this, it's hard to see Republicans being this eager to throw away their majority so quickly.
I don't think they are too concerned about throwing away the majority. Trump just raised 31 million at the NRCC dinner Tuesday, a record for the event. Any failing or even extreme floundering will be a hell of a black eye for Ryan and Trump but I don't think they are overly concerned about 2018 just yet.
I really, seriously can't understand how the hell people thought this would be a good bill for anything other than political ammunition.
WE HAD A BILL BUT THE DEMOCRATS OPPOSED IT
If this passes, the insurance premium hikes and cancelation notices will hit around October of this year, it would be a bloodbath for 2018.
Because that's basically what they've been doing for close to a decade and it's been working?
Most of the stuff they proposed in the Obama years has been hot garbage or laced with poison pills that would force Dems to vote against an otherwise decent bill.
Yes, but they always had the luxury of knowing that those bills would never pass or Democrats would bail them out from their stupidest, most destructive desires (like defaulting on the national debt). All minorities have done this to some degree (see Bush year Dems), but once they actually take power they tend to govern responsibly.
This bill is them giving a giant middle finger to many of their own constituents and hoping they can just lie and avoid blame when the consequences hit.
lets not pretend this matters. Dems got gifted Congress by a walking disaster, with nowhere near the base of Trump, in 06 and couldn't hold it with a once in a lifetime campaigner as President for 8 years. Allow me to quote our boyfriend Felix on the current state of Dems:
"you didn't just lose to Grimace for President, but you lost a thousand plus state legislature seats, you lost 13 governorships, you lost the house and the fucking senate. you lost everything that isn't the Westchester school board. And you're even gonna lose that when you finally run Chelsea Clinton and she loses to one of Donald Trump's illegitimate sons"
as of 1:30 est still not enough votes to pass. They hope to find a solution by 7. So i guess we finally have a ballpark of when they will actually vote. 5-6 centrists have flipped to no because it is moving too far right. what a show
GOP lawmakers say ObamaCare repeal vote may be delayed
Just going to keep on delaying until they get enough votes? The House may delay its vote on the GOP's ObamaCare replacement plan until Friday or next week, several lawmakers said.
"It didn't look like today was going to be when we're going to vote," said Rep. Phil Roe (R-Tenn.) after leaving a meeting with committee chairs and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), who controls the House floor schedule.
Roe said a vote may come Friday.
literally...how
Because the WaPo tracker is up to 36 Republican NOs, and the bill is stuck in an ideological middle, bleeding from both ends. They're never going to present a bill that doesn't result in 10+ million losing coverage, or that doesn't skyrocket premiums for the 50-64ers that make under 40k. What kind of ultra-watered-down do-nothing bill could they actually get through?
Right now they have the luxury of time. I mean its not really a luxury because they have to get started on tax reform at some point. But eventually they will hit a time crunch where they have to decide what is important, placating the rich or attempting to take care of the sick, uninsured, elderly. One side is going to have a bitter pill to swallow but that bitter pill will taste better than letting comrade obama's health care plan survive another year.
The current bill is about placating the rich, obviously. If they want a bill that will take better care of the sick, uninsured, and elderly, that can pass through reconciliation, they're going to need MORE revenue than the ACA provides.
That's never going to happen.
They are the dog that has finally caught the car, and they're now realizing that just flat lying about the effects of the bill isn't working when the entire medical, think-tank, wonk, media communities are coming out against it along with unified Democratic opposition isn't going to work.
Freedom caucus is only 29 members, all 29 aren't NOs right now are they?
