So, I've been quiet about the whole McCain thing because I had to think about it a lot. Honestly, it seemed weird even for him to leave the hospital just to give a yes vote. I was leaning towards a few thoughts and I wanted to see what he did.

I figured either 1. He was a sleaze and undermining all of what he said. 2. He wasn't in the right mind due to the surgery and may not have even known what he was voting on.

But watching the thumbs down video made me realize he was doing exactly what he said he would. I have a feeling they were pressuring him a lot while in the hospital, and probably before going while knowing full well he had cancer. And he was probably pissed as shit about it. This was him giving a big fuck you to them that they wanted him there so desperately, and probably never once seemed to care about his sickness.


With that said, I don't really approve of that method as he was taking a risk on other people's healthcare just for the "fuck you." But dude's got balls, I'll give him that.

They do a pretty good job of "running the healthcare" for the 55 million people on Medicare (somewhere between the population of Italy and S. Korea), who on average have way more intensive health care needs than the people not on Medicare.

He seems to have premeditated it well in advance, with his comments for the press to "wait for the show," and the great political theatre of his thumbs down, which makes it difficult to gauge how firmly he knew the vote rested in his hands (IE, if he had consulted Senator Murkowski beforehand).

Depending on how completely sure he was, it was certainly a worthwhile gamble. If he had simply killed the motion to proceed, McConnell would have continued to delay the process and foster his ill-conceived bills, while keeping the ability to use reconciliation.

The way McCain seems to have played it -- and I don't think this was a whim on his part -- by voting yes on the motion to proceed, as well as the doomed BCRA, he built McConnell's confidence such that he felt comfortable with the Skinny Repeal's chances.

Once it was out to vote, McConnell couldn't withdraw the bill, and McCain's deciding vote means McConnell can no longer pursue repeal under reconciliation, so would require an impossible 60-vote majority.

McCain ultimately ensured any continued health care reform would have to be bipartisan. However risky, this is the best possible outcome for democrats.
