If Tyven being un-classy is what's needed to drive the point fucking home, it's mainly on Day for taking shit this far in the first place.

Depending on how completely sure he was, it was certainly a worthwhile gamble. If he had simply killed the motion to proceed, McConnell would have continued to delay the process and foster his ill-conceived bills, while keeping the ability to use reconciliation.

The way McCain seems to have played it -- and I don't think this was a whim on his part -- by voting yes on the motion to proceed, as well as the doomed BCRA, he built McConnell's confidence such that he felt comfortable with the Skinny Repeal's chances.

Once it was out to vote, McConnell couldn't withdraw the bill, and McCain's deciding vote means McConnell can no longer pursue repeal under reconciliation, so would require an impossible 60-vote majority.

McCain ultimately ensured any continued health care reform would have to be bipartisan. However risky, this is the best possible outcome for democrats.
This is pretty romantic, but I'll be damned if it isn't a great story.

I'm not saying because I disagree with him (though I do).
I'm saying because he has been a smarmy fucking troll dick for years.

Wait yeah, I don't see the issue. We never expected him to be a champion of Obamacare. But he basically wants to end the partisan bullshit and have Congress work on a bill from both sides of the aisle.

"From the beginning, I have believe that Obamacare should be repealed and replaced"

His opinion on that hasn't changed.

"The so-called 'Skinny repeal' amendment the Senate voted on today would not accomplish those goals."

    Further more

"While the amendment would have repealed some of Obamacare's most burdensome regulations, it offered no replacement..."

What I'm saying is McCain doesn't give an actual fuck about what your insurance does. As long as its cheaper and not burdened by those nasty regulations. Can't wait for medical bankruptcies to make america great again.

We all know John McCain is still a mostly shitty person, Fiye.

Doesn't matter what reasoning he gave for his decision, it's our best outcome. No one's extolling the heroism of his decision. lol

Or Collins or Murkowski, for that matter. They're still republicans with mostly awful voting records. But they helped in this instance.

I'm aware. But you can't seriously have expected him to not want to replace Obamacare. But he at least made the vote to stop the dumbass attempts at replacing it without an alternative in place. And his ideas, even if they are just words, about it needing to be a bipartisan effort ring true.

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who remembers that the ACA was a republican plan to begin with and the democrats went to painstakingly great lengths to try and win over republican support, even as Arlen Specter defected from his party. Like, Obama went after Collins and Snowe pretty damn hard to try and get their votes.

In the end, it was 60 democrats to break the filibuster, and less than that for the actual vote.

I don't get the cries over bipartisanship.

Because the media and public keep buying into the lie of "both sides are just as bad."

I would actually say fair play to him for not letting the ideoligical muppets have their run of the place. Repulicans basically got showed up for being all talk and basically being "haters gonna hate" but when it came to coming up with something better.... they had sweet fuck all. They wanted to throw people under the bus just for the sake of ideology and to hell with the consequences.

Thats the thing about being in charge. You can hate things but if you cant come up with credible alternatives and only try to get rid of something simply because you hate it then your basically talking out of your ass and wasting everyones time and money.

Have to give it to Mccain though he is at least levelheaded enough when it came down to it to stand up to the idiots in the Republican Party and say if your gonna make changes at least come up with something that improves the situation and wins people over and not just wreck things and walk away. Least now with the whole issue people might actually sit down and talk and actually look at making improvements that the major majority of people can get behind.

I would also say hes making a point about all the bullshit going on up in Washington. It's gotten to the point that nothing will get done at all because people refuse to compromise and actually work on credible solutions. As well as that the fact that some want to simply repeal something without a workable alternative ready shows how little thinking and actual work as gone into something that would affect so many people. Its toxic politics in the end. Fact is if government in the states is actually gonna work it needs people to actually sit down and look at the problems and leave the toxic ideology outside the door. Either do it right or dont do anything at all.

Obamacare was largely based on Romneycare in MA.

uhhhh you guys realize legislation isn't written by the governor in Massachusetts right? Romney supported the efforts to expand coverage (back when he was one of the most liberal Republicans in the country), but Romneycare was written by one of the most Democratic legislatures in the country, and all eight of his line-item vetos were overridden by said legislature. not sure the qualified support of one Northeastern governor for a similar system equates to 'REPUBLICANS INVENTED OBAMACARE'
