    Nioh (PC/PS4)

No thread on this? (Search didn't bring it up)

Nioh (Japanese: 仁王 Hepburn: Niō?, lit. "benevolent king") is an upcoming action role-playing game developed by Team Ninja for the PlayStation 4 (PS4). It will release worldwide in February 2017: it will be published by Koei Tecmo in Japan and Sony Interactive Entertainment internationally. Gameplay, which was inspired by the Souls series, revolves around navigating levels and defeating monsters that have infested an area. Nioh takes place in the early 1600s during a fictionalized version of the Sengoku period, when Japan was in the midst of civil war prior to the ascension of the Tokugawa shogunate. A sailor named William, in pursuit of an enemy, arrives in Japan and is enlisted by Hattori Hanzō, servant to Tokugawa Ieyasu, in defeating yokai that are flourishing in the chaos of war.

Today is the last day for the demo and its pretty good. Definitely Souls-like. I have to decide if I want to keep playing the demo today or just wait on it to come out because im already sold.

I played the earlier demos and I was already sold. Didn't know today is the last day on the demo.

It's a new level, but, a pretty meh one (comparatively) in my opinion. Also I can't tell if they supremely nerfed ninjutsu or it just feels shitty because of the locked skill tree.

I wish I were good at spear, that shit looks broken.

I'm terrible at these games, but I loved it. I die so often it's kind of embarrassing.

I hope the entire game doesn't have the dense fog; it made it really hard to see enemies in the first area.

Probably has to be there for performance reasons.

Speaking of, fucking A+ for Team Ninja including the option for 60 fps. The resolution can drop to some pretty ugly levels at some points, but man does the game feel way way better with it on.

The fog isn't there in the twilight version of the level, but it's nighttime so sightlines still aren't that great (but much longer than default level though).

Reviews are trickling in, lots of 9s, some 7s and 8s, Jim Sterling gave it a 10. Sitting at an 87 on metacritic right now.

Halg the level of that last demo was good enough for me. I already know I'm going to Target to pick it up on Tuesday and playing it all morning until I have to go to work.

As someone who I know plays Dark Souls, how is this overall (combat, lore, story, environments etc)? I'm not exactly looking for a Dark Souls replacement cuz what I remember from the demo it was a lot more action orientated but still. I need to know it has something.

It's has the foundation of a Souls game. Difficulty, level up system, die twice to lose your "souls," big boss fights. Shortcuts galore. That's about it.

Fights are slow and methodical. Stamina is the be all, end all. In Souls terms, the best way I could describe it would be the offensive mind set of Bloodborne, but the speed of Dark Souls. It's more like a Ninja Gaiden game though. Considering Team Ninja made it, that's not too surprising.
You don't have one big sprawling world. Instead you have missions that take place I'm different setting. They are pretty big still, though. At least the first actually level is. The level design could be a bit better though. Some times I had difficulty telling if I was in a new place or I had found myself back in an old place. A lot of sameness going on.

No character creation or choosing classes. You choose two weapons at the beginning of the game and one of three spirits that will give you a boost in different ways.

Lore, there's nothing hidden as far as I can tell. Very straight forward(so far). You get story in the cutscenes, you get mission briefings. Again, Ninja Gaiden.
Loot:this game gives you weapons and armor everywhere. All sorts of all kinds of weapons and armors and items. Different types of them and even if you have two of the same weapons, with the different stats and attributes they have on then, they'll be completely different- not always better. But you can get rid of stuff you don't want by donating it for more useful use able items, selling them, or decrafting them and putting some stats on another weapon you do want to keep.

That being said, it does scratch that Souls itch for me. You'll be expected to learn from your mistakes and it won't treat you too kindly while teaching the lessons.

I'd recommend it. It say more about it but have to leave for work.

Mind you, that's only my impressions after only playing 4 hours.

Oh, and it takes place in 17th century Japan, so I'm guessing there'll be an abundance of overused fictionalized characters from that era. Already met Hanzo.

In the beginning cutscene where they flash through a bunch of stuff there was a a guy who gave of definite nobunaga vibes.

And don't worry about fudging up your stats at the beginning. You can buy an item to reset stats and redo.

The main character (and a good portion of the story from my understanding) is already a hyper fictionalized version of a real person, so all the over used historical characters makes alot of sense.

iirc Nobunaga is not the main/final antagonist from what I've heard of leaks. He's definitely supposed to already be dead during the story and the main thrust of the plot is the power struggle for who's succeeding him.

Fuckin every gamestop in the area (there's like 10) is sold out. It's not a circle of life thing either. The dude printed out the stores that have it. Like 2 stores 20 miles away have 1 copy. Normally I'd Amazon it, but I have a gift card I wanna use, so I guess I'll wait on restock

And yes this is correct. The game is very (very) loosely following William Adams life from the time he arrived in Japan, where he served as an advisor to Tokugawa Ieyasu
