May be a bit of both. Team Ninja doesn't put out too many games; their mainstay is DoA which doesn't get much attention anymore (as far as I know). I'm not sure how well the Ninja Gaiden series was selling later in its life. I feel like they always get a mix of "holy shit, this is awesome!" and "fuck this game," but nothing in between. I had 1 & 2 for Xbox/360, but didn't keep up with the series after that.
My pre-order should get here today from Amazon. Been watching streams and really want to play it. It was giving me some Onimusha nostalgia vibes.
Black and 2 received great praise long after their years. 3 wasn't good until they essentially revamped it with 3RE. Yaiba was a shitshow, and they're aware of that. They're holding back on returning to Ninja Gaiden until they know they can get it right. Nioh seems to be a good indication that they're learning from their mistakes.
I've been watching streams of this game and it looks really good. Gonna be grabbing this as soon as I find some time to play.
A little more: no invasions- at least as far as I know- but you can summon help. No sure how it works though, haven't done it yet.
Instead of invasions, they have blood stains like dark souls where you can summon the person who died, though they are AI controlled. They have a chance to drop the itemsame weapons/armor they're wearing, though the game doesn't tell you what they're wearing, just each items rarity.
This game's bonfire, the Kodama shrine is super cute. Little green dudes with bowls on their head doing little cute stuff. You save Kodama in the levels and they can increase bonuses that you can get from the shrine.
A negative of the Koda made shrine I'm just finding out; all those noisy, super cute things they do at the shrine get pretty annoying of you decide to afk and do a few things within earshot. Of course, muting the TV is always an option.
This game has ambushes like dark souls. But this game also has a mechanic where it warns you of enemies about to attack so you actually have a split second to react. It tests your reflexes more than just checking to see if you're paying super close attention.
One definite thing this game has over Souls, so much easier to look like a complete bad ass in fuedel Japanese gear.
I'm about to hit my second boss fight now, I think. Definitely looks like a boss room I'm about to walk into.
-not enjoying the boss fights so far. Both of them were practically the same thing. They have their moves that will one-shot you, moves that will destroy your ki and let them one-shot you, and then their basic combos which your supposed to use to take the opportunity to hit them 1 or 2 times then back away and wait for them to do again.
At the 3rd boss now and yeah, I just don't see how people can beat a boss until at least after their third try because you need to see every single one of their moves.
Alright, 3rd boss was pretty fun once you learned his shit. Level design is getting better too.
Well, I got my wish and beat the 4th boss on one try. I d9nt think I'd really classify it as a boss fight though. Grr. Someone else needs to be playing this lol.
Oh well. I probably won't be able to touch this game again until next week.
I'm going to try to play it tonight/tomorrow. I got the notification it was delivered. Usually on Wednesdays I have time to sit and play games cause wifey is in class, but her class was cancelled tonight. Tomorrow I'm hoping there's enough snow to not have to go into work so maybe I'll get a chance to play this.
Was going to try to finish Last of Us first, but I don't think I'll be able to wait.
I'm playing it, I'm just not stopping to blog and brag every mission. Also there kind of are pseudo invasions. There's an enemy that causes the AI revenants to be forcibly summoned if you go near their graves.
I'm surprised how many missions there are. Done 5 main and 11 side, and my stats say I'm 26.3% done, which implies something like 67 total. Seems like there's 18 main missions (I suspect it's 9 normal, 9 twilight though) according to the scenario screen. There's just a TON of content in this game.
I'd hardly call saying I get my ass kicked every boss bragging.
Hoping new spirits keep coming semiregularly. Still haven't found one I like better than fire dog.
Any good stuff in the sub missions aside from just earning the rewards at the end? Like different enemies or bosses yet?
No new bosses so far but every time I've encountered a new demon type is been in a side mission. They're much shorter, usually cleared in 1 or 2 tries, but still really fun.
Edit: But one of the ones I have right now is called The Ogress which I'm pretty sure is going to be the level/boss from the final demo. There's also things like the Tachibana Muneshige "rematch"
Been playing this a bit, loving this game so far. Getting the same kind of feel I got from my first dark souls playthrough, feels like there' a ton to discover.
In case anyone hasn't tried this yet: if you have an attack with long enough recovery, you can attack in one stance, stance switch during the recovery animation (before the Ki Pulse window), then dodge/Ki Pulse in the second stance. Kusarigama became way stronger and a ton more fun to play after I figured this out.
Beat the first twilight mission. I wish Dark Souls did something like those. I couldnt tell if the boss was any harder though. Once I finally got his moves down after the first time I kept failing at the boss, Ian aged him pretty easily this time.
As far as I can tell, Twilight bosses don't have any real new mechanics or attacks, they just have scaled HP and summon a few normal enemies mid-fight. I'm really disappointed with how the twilight missions work, I think that's the one thing in the game they completely and utterly fucked up. Having 2 a day to choose from makes it so there's about a 75% chance you either don't have one you can do, or you have one that's so low a level it's completely trivial. The first time I actually had one unlocked and had a chance to do it, it was level 20 and I was 75.
On a positive note, I absolutely love the level design of this game. The only one I haven't thoroughly enjoyed was the one from the most recent demo with the Ogress. Iga castle in particular stands out as one of my favorites.
I didn't realize twilight missions were random. Hadn't really paid much attention until I did my first one and it was the first level.
Lightning shrine/underground was the last main level I played and I really like the rainy shrine part a lot and was sad when it was so short.
I don't think they're truly random, but they cycle. Like yesterday it was Onryuki and Hino-enma. Today it is umi-bozu and the side mission with the three gods. Tomorrow will almost certainly be Joru-gomo and whatever was after it.
Really enjoying the game, I'm up to the second mission on the second island. My only real complaint are boss mobs that defy game rules by attacking more once they're at no stamina, like the Warrior of the West side quest. He's just a massive dick that I gave up on (for now) after an hour~ of tries.
Thought there was a lot of hype behind this game, but I'm seeing a pretty lackluster response to it. Haven't seen much media attention on it, Youtubers seem to be glossing it over, and (anecdotal of course) my PS friend's list is pretty much devoid of people playing it. I tried to summon a visitor earlier for shits and 20 minutes later no one had popped. Maybe it's just a timing issue, I've seen a lot of attention on For Honor right now.
Just ordered a copy, figure by the time Amazon gets and sends me a copy I'll be finished with Tales of Berseria and Yakuza 0. Been looking forward to it, just tired of buying stuff and not finishing it before getting more.

I am playing too. I am very bad.
The boss of the first real level (the caves) is just raping me. I know what moves are coming, but that doesn't stop me from getting absolutely destroyed.
