The GOP are like someone standing on a ledge waiting to jump. They made up their minds a long time ago, but they just have to do it at this point.

Both sides had made up their minds long ago. It's not like the Dems would have changed their mind if they found out Ford was lying. Although it probably did no favors to have Kavanaugh start up his Clinton conspiracy to their faces here. Trump really made this bad for them though. I know any of them wishes this was a safer pick and a lot of them are doubling down because they feel they have to. No matter how much Trump is claiming that they are winning, winning, winning everything I don't think any of them are willing to risk losing putting a very conservative vote in the Supreme Court if they lose seats.

I'll eat my words happily if I'm wrong.

Kavanaugh was a terrible nominee even if he wasn't a rapist. He didn't need to also be a rapist in order to be disqualified from serious consideration.

Kavanaugh was committing acts of perjury before these accusations even came to light. He was not the right guy for the job before this even started, and the GOP would have easily preferred a better candidate. Had Trump been more competent, a new justice would have been confirmed already.

While yes, both sides are guilty, Republicans have really been all about doubling down on the inexcusable for awhile now. Roy Moore, Trump, or Kavanaugh would have never received such defense from the party in the not so distant past. This is the new normal of which the party never would have dared to try until they saw in 2016 that it actually works.

As far as eating your words, that was a silly thing to say. As if we are going to enter their minds and find that answer. If Kavanaugh had been withdrawn they could have already presented someone the Democrats could not actually stop. Now, even if they renominate it is going to be very tight.

Merrick Garland was a more qualified centrist who should have easily been confirmed by more than just Democrats. This is a party issue, that there is no check against because the current president won't choose a good candidate over one which purely benefits themselves.

Goes to show you what a joke US politics have become these days. Bad enough the partisan bullshit has congress locked up and the republican party essentially allowed an incompetent troll into the WH but allowing blatent idelogues into the Supreme Court could backfire down the line. When you throw impartiality to the wind and allow this to happen it will come to a point where the whole system will utterly break down without serious reforms. Too much BS, idiocy and money has been allowed to poison the system and it cant continue indefinately without something giving at some point. The UK is also similar to the US in having the same sort of us vs them with the conservatives and labour and the indecision there is risking the UK imploding next year.
