It was more like hoping it would not happen out of the decency of not wanting to see a sexual predator and local frat boy gang rapist. That is going to protect the POTUS from their increasingly apparent crimes, nominated to the supreme court.
This is very similar to how everyone figured after all the dozen women coming forth in 2016, the Access Hollywood video, failing to condemn David Duke and the KKK for far too long, the rhetoric in general, and so on that there was no way Trump could be elected out of human decency.
Then we were all like:

Queue the Brett, and now we are all like:

If this goes through, it's going to be a big short term win at the expense of lasting electoral consequences for Republicans. Flake surprised me, after that floor speech, he's going to go down as the face of this nomination. Why he made this show about himself and not just sit back and ride party line without a fuss is confounding.
This is a long term win for their battle but will most definitely be a long term loss at the same time.
Nor, his shitty book
If you continue to alienate women, more specifically lose more college educated women, it's going to have lasting electoral consequences.
Yes, a supreme Court seat is not short term. But from purely political standpoint, the court would be just as far right if they nominated Barrett. It's a zero-sum game from the prospect of the nominee and how cases will ultimately be decided. So, they push through Kavanaugh. It's a short term win.
In the long term, the court gets tainted, it moves swing voters and women left, and it's absolutely going to hurt Republicans electorally.
There will be many reasons people think Trump will be a 1 term President. This one will stick out in particular for a very long time. This is disastrous.

But props to you guys for being eternally optimistic.
This kinda shit has worn me down.
That does not have nearly the consequence this will.
We're not talking about Trump.
Can't imagine who it wouldn't wear down. I still stand by my assertion yesterday that the US has increasingly become a lost cause.
Optimism though, is despicable in the face of everything. It is better served as the milk of the coping, complacent, and contrarians rather than anything righteous or meaningful. Those "the sun will come out tomorrow" people are drunk on hope.
