I've seen here, on Twitter, and on Facebook that there is some clear confusion about what these women are asking for in an FBI investigation. They aren't asking to open a criminal investigation. They are asking for a renewed background investigation. Looking at precedent, they feel (rightly so) that a congressional investigation is a partisan exercise into a he said, she said back and forth. This is further substantiated by the fact they don't want to call witnesses. The background investigation is a non-partisan way of gathering facts.

What would it matter? The GOP would confirm Bill Cosby at this point.

Everyone acts like Susan Collins is going to matter because swinging against your party in a minority situations somehow makes you less of of a Republican or something. She has gotten in line to vote yes after she acted like she wasn't going to on various issues time and again. There is no reason to really count on her doing the right thing here.

Same thing with Justice Kennedy. Just because you vote to legalize gay marriage or upheld abortion doesn't mean you are some super moderate judge and hero to the left in the face of things like Citizens United. The bad decisions count more than the good ones, and somehow the labeled moderates get the focus on their better choices because the suspense and borderline illusion of a swing vote helps the media bring in the ratings while shaping perceptions.

The GOP used to be the party for legalizing abortion for the same logic people bring into question; why have big government controlling the reproductive rights of women? It wasn't until after abortion was legalized that the christian right was galvanized, started a few movements, protests/shootings/bombings at clinics, and took over the party leading to today's "NEVER EVER ABORT" stance of the party.
