As for the exact reason behind the shelving, sources say the film did not fall in line with the new strategy being implemented by DC Films as well as HBO Max. The studio is looking to make theatrical tentpoles with budgets at $90 million-plus, and from early footage seen this did not fall into place with that model. (Batgirl was greenlighted at $70 million budget.)

WB is also cutting back on premiering featuring films on HBOM.

Keaton apparently wasn't much in batgirl anyways. I think he's still in Flash, but I just don't see how that movie gets released especially if the trials around Ezra Miller start next year.

Yeah this is the part that confuses me. Recouping some of the budget is better than none...isn't it?

Only thing I can think of is them being worried about collateral damage to DC movies/brand in general but it would have to be incredibly bad if thats why, especially since they are already dealing with the back to back PR issues of Miller and Heard.

Also, it would need to be S P E C T A C U L A R L Y dogshit to not up the general quality of DC live action film releases.
The odds are pretty much nil on it doing any kind of damage to the brand.

If the DC movies had a good rep sure, but this is a film franchise with such absolute bangers as Suicide Squad, Batman vs Superman, WW84, or the Whedon version of Justice League.

There is also the whole thing with David Zaslav just seemingly wanting to kill every single good thing about HBO and Warner products since the sale to Discovery went thru.

I would assume at the rate he's going that the entire product lineup acquired in that acquisition will have been cancelled and gutted because the man is just all about every form of cost cutting imaginable.

Unironically I think this is a clever marketing stunt. Tell everyone "We're not releasing this", let the buzz and speculation reach a peak, then drop the movie anyway due to "Demand". People who want to see it see, and people who want to see why it must have been so bad to originally be canned will watch it out of morbid curiosity.
