I'm just so surprised SE is basically skipping this year.... do we even have a big fall release?

SE has all those spinoffs coming out this year don't they? I feel like they dove head first into mobile games this year, and big releases are happening 2018-before 2020.

Except it isn't, they actually have hours on hours of stuff, it just doesn't start until an hour from now.

Plenty of good stuff.

Dauntless, Fortnight, Cuphead, Battletech, Grift Lands, Ni no Kuni, South Park, Evil Within, etc.
It's also that weird mid-gen stage when all the early ambitious titles for new consoles are out and the refined, deep dived late gen titles are only starting to be developed. It'll be this way next year too.
Not saying its all rotgut now, not at all. But there won't be that "excitement" again until 2019.
There's one major problem with this though. In previous generations developers we're having to deal with the fact that each console was bringing its own architecture to the table and it took time to understand the nuances and how to maximize what was available. Both the PS4 and Xbone are simply locked down PCs, so there's no big tricks to figure out.
This boring phase of open world 3rd person lite-rpgs we're currently in is likely here to stay until there's a financial reason to change things.

I'm 50/50 with your particular taste, but at least you have things that you actually liked instead of the "everything is shit, worst E3 ever, gaming is dead" melodrama. I personally thought there was a ton of stuff with lots of potential shown off this year. Obviously generic AAA shit will always be generic, but the midrange and indie presence was as strong as ever.
As far as things I knew nothing about before E3 or leaks immediately preceeding it, I'm looking forward to hearing more about, there's The Last Night (game of the show for me), Ashen, Code Vein, Anthem, Life is Strange, Dishonored, Ruiner, Hidden Agenda, A Way out, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Ori 2, Wargroove, Xcom 2 expansion, Matterfall, and Deep Rock Galactic. There's also new info for things I was already excited about, namely Vampyr (though the trailer was kinda boring), Tacoma, Shadows of War (cautiously optimistic about it), Ni No Kuni 2, Ooblets, Crackdown 3 (but the trailer made me less excited), and A Hat In Time. Then there's the B and C-tier of "has potential, but I'm not expecting much" with Spider-Man, Detroit, Monster Hunter, Dauntless, Beyond Good & Evil 2, Evil Within 2, Cuphead, South Park, Moss, Black The Fall, Metro Exodus, Battletech (I love HBS, but they're much better writers than combat designers), Wolfenstein 2, Mario+Rabbids, and Ace Combat 7.
And here's Nintendo.
