Largely because Metroid is just...nothing to Japan in comparison to the other franchises lol.

Yeah, the Metroid drought has been a victim of a few things. First among them is the popularity disparity between NA and JP. Second, it seems like a lot of Metroid projects start at the end of a consoles cycle and then midway through development they're like "this should go on the next console instead!".

I have to believe Nintendo had started another Metroid game during the Wii cycle, but then paused it for the Wii U. When the Wii U stalled they probably cancelled it again and began from the ground up on MP4 a year or so ago.

It's incredibly awful for an international corporation to neglect a franchise like that while supporting other small franchises. With the state of Japanese console gaming, there's little hope for growth if they focus exclusively on Japanese consumers.

Just based purely on how many games from a conference I'm buying, I'd say Nintendo won for me. I wasn't really expecting any surprises and we got Metroid Prime 4 and a core Pokemon game announcement for the Switch which are both great to look forward to......someday (hopefully by end of next year). Plus, most of the other stuff looked great as well.
