He actually may have saved the video game industry from a far worse off fate in the early 90s, so I respect it. What people don't remember about those days is that the industry wasn't exactly policing itself (Sega included, despite having a "ratings system") when it came to having a legitimate ratings system, and Lieberman actually gave Nintendo, Sega, Atari, 3DO and others the option to police themselves before the government would step in and run shit. We got the ESRB and for the most part a government hands-off approach towards gaming. There is the fact that Lieberman later teamed up with Hilary Clinton 2004 to enforce rules upon the ESRB, but that's another story entirely.

Aside from that, the man has been all over the place with his political leanings.

I could also make the case, if I were so inclined, that this laissez-faire attitude from the government on oversight to not only both the video game industry but the tech sector in general is what led to the rise of silicon valley libertarianism, EA Spouse, net neutrality, the boom-bust development cycle of video games, and so on.

I'd rather just appreciate the point you're making tho. Hindsight is 20/20 after all, and nobody in government actually understands technology anyway.

right but he lost the Democratic primary in 2006 and promptly ran as an independent gaining support from every Republican office holder in Connecticut as Hillary Clinton and Howard Dean called for him to quit the race, and he then proceeded to endorse McCain in 2008 and refused to endorse Obama in 2012. Trump brought him back to Hillary but calling a hawkish independent who oscillates between the parties a Democrat is a stretch.

You're not wrong at all, it's a huge rabbit hole that came up off from such oversight -- the Dot Com Bubble bursting in 2002 & Net Neutrality are likely our most popular examples, yeah. The ramifications are pretty dire from having a hands-off approach, but as far as most companies are concerned, its likely better than the government coming in and trying to run things when they simply have no clue about technology and how it affects culture. When it comes to stories like EA Spouse, there's just no excuse however. Of course, this was not as large a problem back then in the late 80s to mid 90s (though it was a problem).

I have also learned to appreciate small things like this as well, now that I'm a little older and wiser about how politics actually works behind the scenes. However, I'd say that we may see a second coming of the video game industry vs US government, but only because of the mediums we use now and the oversight by the government on that. Back then, Lieberman got at the video game industry because of just how accessible mature video games were to the [younger] general public by way of Blockbuster Video and other rental companies. We know now that the rental industry was obliterated by the Internet, but the idea of easy accessibility still persists, now that we are slowly moving from discs to a purely digital format.
