I get that the show is doing it's own thing and not directly following the books (and more or less outright ignoring the games) but man...

Yeah, it's not like the show had created any attachment to him at that point, so they could have just had him be some new character if that's all they were doing with him.

I'm a bit deeper into the season now, and I feel like this would be substantially more enjoyable if I hadn't ever read the books.

Changes from the books (and even the characterization of some people as portrayed in the games) are very very very questionable. People who have only played the games would likely only be bothered by the thing in episode 2.

If you could separate it from the existing source material I would say that season 2 has been a substantial improvement over season 1, but fucking hell a lot of the changes just feel like the whole "subverting expectations" schtick to keep those familiar with the books on their toes and not put in to the show for any other reason.

Well it's not an unfamiliar concept for the Witcher franchise as is, since the books and the games are separate entities especially with 3 and all the various characters brought in who are clearly very dead in the books.

the games took some small liberties but i was always extremely impressed with how faithful they were to the books in both characterization and established lore. feel they gave Sapkowski's work far more respect than the direct adaptation of the show does.

and then there was the narrative of the 3rd which was literally them saying eh fuck it remember that time Ciri got lost and Nilfgaard invaded in the books? let's do that story again.

Ya I agree with that. I just remember being bored as shit during some parts of the later books. He introduced a few too many new POV characters a bit too late in the game for me to give a shit. Kinda similar problem to what we talked about with Expanse and Tanaka/Kit
