I was having a conversation with a student (he's like 23-25) last week and after mentioning he had never seen the original Top Gun I started pulling out every Tom Cruise movie I could think of to see what he had seen.
The only Tom Cruise movie he has seen was Valkyrie.
Just throwing that out there
Outside the Mission Impossible movies, I can only remember one Tom Cruise movies in the last 20 years. Edge of Tomorrow.
Tropic Thunder is Cruise's best movie in the last 20 years
But surely Jerry Maguire was onl... Oh.
Oh...
Damn. Word of mouth really isn't letting me skip this one. Gonna have to check it out in the next day or so.
Maybe I'll go check this out tomorrow.
Also Edge of Tomorrow was legit.

Cruise for the most part has always been a quality over quantity actor. That said, I'm actually surprised he's never had a $100 Million dollar opening before.
Watched it last night. Almost a straight rehash of the first film in many way - not that it is a bad thing to remake a 36 year old movie. Definitely worth a watch if you liked the first one or were an '80s kid and never quite got The Top Gun Anthem out of your head. My only regret is not seeing it in Imax. I was impressed at how much they were able to make Miles Teller look like Anthony Edwards. Or maybe that's a key part of why he was cast.
The only thing that slightly disappointed me:
Spoiler: show
I was hesitant to see this even though the previews looked amazing.
I was honestly blown away. I grew up in the 80s so the original is a favorite of mine and brings back a lot of good memories.
How they handled some parts had me in tears and start to finish I loved every moment.
Definitely worth a watch and even re watch in theaters.

Finally saw this, the kind of summer blockbuster with the blend of heart, action, stakes, enjoyable characters, and cinematography that rarely come along in so successful a combination.
The soundtrack was also highly on point, both in terms of overall score and effects (plus how they started playing David Bowie the first time Jennifer Connolly appears on screen).
One major gripe though:

They very very lightly gloss over that in like one single sentence

Good, someone else bumped thisWife took me to see it a couple days ago. She really loved the first one and she showed it to me back when we started dating years ago. Anyway, as just a regular movie goer for this one I really liked it. Solid flick overall, soundtrack was dope, acting great etc. Nice to see "summer blockbuster" w/o having to resign turning off my brain for half of it.
I've never seen the original Top Gun, I felt like I already watched it because of that one Tarantino rant and how many times it was parodied. There were some problems with that, because I thought Goose was called Mongoose.
I saw a tweet about it, but the most unrealistic part of the movie was a bunch of millennials knew all the lyrics to great balls of fire, haha.
It was also weird how it was vague what country they bombed.
Oh, and one thing I LOOOOVE is how cool Hangman's helmet with the callsign was.
They were being vague on purpose, even though the country is CLEARLY Iran. They're the only ones who still fly the F-14
I watched it this weekend with my dad for Father's Day and I really did enjoy it. Thought it would have way too much action, but they did it really well and I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would.
My fiance even stayed awake the whole time which shocked me.
Before I spend the $6 to see this I just need to know if it still has awkward ass sex scenes in-between the pew pew scenes

It's an afterthought.
