The only major flaw was the writing (and Ed I guess).

Casting and acting for the core cast was good to great, visual and audio was solid. But the writing for the stuff they added (the Julia/Vicious plot) was not good, but writing is a fixable problem when the rest of the product was well put together and you're dealing with an established property that has stories to pull from.

But clearly Netflix figured it wasn't worth the bother

I think this is spot on. I loved the cast, thoroughly enjoyed the cinematography and music...which might have actually made it that much more frustrating. It was like I had blue balls the whole time waiting for it to get good

almost as if the show didn't catch the tone of the original at all.

The original was a lot of nonsensical one off episodes. Not that that’s bad but it would’ve been difficult to recreate that in a live action series.

Why? There are plenty of live action tv shows that have done that. One just off the top of my head being Buffy.
That being said, they need to stop trying to live-adapt things.

Buffy strongly followed the monster of the week + side plot to advance the season story. It had very few completely stand alone episodes

Psych! There were long story arcs mixed in, but for the most parts each episode was just totally it's own thing.

Unless y'all only mean sci-fi. In which I'd direct you to Star Trek etc.

/shrug. That sounds exactly like Cowboy Bebop to me, if you replace monster with bounty, with the only difference being how compact/short Bebop is by comparison.

Bebop was mostly Bounty of the Week in the anime. On the Netflix show, episodes 1-6 dealt with them tracking down a bounty while 7-10 did not.
