Same, this isn't a good look for fighting games in general

But considering their rep for multi-releases for updates and shit this could end up being pretty much the same overall. But I never really invested heavily in their games because of it.

I don't think it's arcsys's fault in this one, i blame bamco more than anything. I knew you were gonna do some retarded response like this, but keep in mind the recent guilty gear games didn't have season passes. Also, arcsys by themselves being their own publisher w/ pretty much, they provided characters for free like elphelt, dizzy for the first week. I really do say this is more on bamco being assfucks.

This is sadly the standard operating procedure of video games now. The base price of games hasn't changed for over a decade at this point, while development costs have gone up dramatically. DLC and season passes are the norm to keep things profitable.

They didn't have season passes because they had paid upgrades with paid DLC characters added on top.

Say what you want about Capcom, but - with one Fukushima-induced exception - they charge for DLC characters or they charge for upgrades that come with all that version's characters, but they don't charge you for both.

Should have charged $8 per character for $64 total, as per the arcsys tradition.

But yeah, this seems to have taken a hatchet to peoples hype for this game. Most would have been excited for legitimate post-launch support+DLC, and even if that's what this ultimately is, seems like a terrible way to market it. The base roster hasn't even been fully announced, and some of the characters they have shown were a work in progress (hey tien with no VA and missing animations).

Is fishing for pre-orders of "ultimate" editions or whatever and blind season pass purchases, really worth the loss in initial sales? You know a lot of people that don't take fighting games seriously are going to be waiting for the inevitable discounted version with everything baked in now, if they still remember the game by than.

    Yes.

Why is this even a question? Companies wouldn't do this kind of stuff unless there was a financial benefit to it, and considering how EVERY AAA game does this kind of thing now, obviously it works.

The pass not coming with the CE isn't a huge surprise as there's been games lately that haven't had their season passes not come with the CE. The thing is, I wish we could've waited for the full roster reveal before talking about it? I guess that part just always rubs me the wrong way, but then again with it coming out when it's coming out (I believe Monster Hunter World comes out the same day...? Oh boy), the have to promote it when they are, so it's whatever.

To me folks are still gonna buy the game. Now it's just a matter of how much money they dump into it. Do they still get the CE and then the other shit on top? Do they just get the standard with the pass and say fuck the overpriced CE? We'll see.

For me, I'm def getting Monster Hunter World, because it being on PS4 is gonna be godlike and I'll just get DBFZ at a later point or see if there's a deal that pops up.

I'm sure the game will still be fire, but it's funny how this practice, which is happening more and more in every game, and every fighting game, is what's 'turning people off'

What should REALLY turn you off is if there's loot crates, or for this game "Dragon Balls" that you use to make wishes on RNG content.

On the bright side, we will always have DBZF solar eclipse memes.

No amount of DLC could ever ruin those.

The companies wouldn't do X unless it was in their financial best interest argument loses it's edge when you see so many major games flopping, studios shutting down, etc. The people making these decisions are not omniscient, and just because it works for some games/demographics doesn't mean it works for all.

Bamco has sold 2 million plus copies of Tekken 7 in just a few months time (compared to SFV yet to reach that number despite more then a year lead).

I think it's safe to say they understand what they're doing in terms of marketing for fighting games.

Regardless, video games are a very volatile market and always have been. That so many of the major publishers lean on the season pass/loot box/real money currency post release money makers is a clear sign it's a viable strategy, and is only growing on a year to year basis because trends show that people are willing to pay for it.

If there is a silver medal for DLC shenanigans, I think it would have to go to NRS. And (last I checked) NRS has the top-selling fighter on current-gen consoles.

So yeah, the idea that sales are inhibited by DLC is not really consistent with the facts on the ground. It is more frequently a rhetorical hammer used to bash a company one dislikes.

Dragon Ball FighterZ - DBZ fighting game by Arc System Works - 2018

The irony in all this is that SFV is probably the most consumer friendly game at this point in regards to DLC characters.

Yes it is. They're a business. Businesses are about making not just money. Not just some money, but ALL of the money they can carry off. If they see other companies doing something that makes money, they WILL parrot it.

Businesses are not your friends. They are your dealers, peddling in things they have that you want.

I wonder what the reception would have been if they just decided to announce DLC plans after launch by 2-3 months along with the season pass for said DLC. The way devs work these days, they already plan DLC way before launch as it is so it's not like anything about their workload changes.

You will never, ever please everyone. If you announce it later you'd still have people complain, or you'd have people bitch about "but what chars will be DLC" or whatever. The thing that probably turns folks off on it is the CE being basically useless unless you want the figure for the most part, but then again, aren't most CE's pretty useless aside from that?

Among AAA games, that's not even a "probably." Provided Capcom continues their stated policy - and there's no reason to believe they won't - you can get every character in the game without spending an extra dime. And unlike the early days of survival horror, now you can do General Story (+extra), Character Story, Demonstration (v1 and 2), Trials (v1 and 2), along with the weekly 5k 30 second challenge. If you don't get caught up in buying stages and costumes, it's pretty easy to stay updated on characters just by doing weeklies and clearing the basic demo/story/trial/easy survival for each new character that you get.

I mean, people consider Sin in Xrd:S to be obviously free because you can buy him with in-game currency. I had to sit through 3 hours of GGXrd: The Movie to get him (and that's not really a complaint, I would have watched it anyway because the game is beautiful).
