    Pokemon Switch - 2019

Core Title developed by Game Freak
“Game Freak has begun developing a core RPG Pokemon title on Nintendo Switch,” Pokemon Company president Tsunekazu Ishihara said during the Nintendo E3 2017 spotlight. “It may not release for more than a year, but we hope you will look forward to it all the same.”

We are deep in rumor central, but seeing this around for starters:

    Spoiler: show

    SkinnySnubbull @SkinnySnubbull
RUMOR ALERT: Gen 8 starters for Pokémon. The cave bear is rumored to evolve into Grass/Electric typing, Pony into Fire/Steel, and Coral Pure Water. Thread mysteriously got deleted and images weren’t linked anywhere after reversing which is hype. Could this be Gen 7 leaks all over

Exciting but I hope they do something to change things up. I bought Sun/Moon and I didn't like the totem system much, but I appreciated them attempting something different. The battles were such a snooze fest because you could one shot everything and I never cared for the PVP meta. Then ultra Sun/Moon came and I couldn't bring myself to do the whole thing all over again because of how boring it was and how they force you through the beginning tutorials. Really started to lose my interest in the games for PVE.

As hype as I always thought I would be for a console Pokémon main entry, I couldn't get into Sun/Moon and stopped before I even finished the main storyline. Before those came out I'd caught them all, could be that having another 100 dropped on me after that burnt out my desire for more.

Being able to speed up or skip cutscenes would go a long way imo
I did the same though- bought sun/moon and couldn't even finish it

I quite enjoyed Sun/Moon, but yeah, these games need some serious changes to handholding early on. It felt like it took hours to get through the "tutorial" section in Sun and Moon lol. Skipping cutscenes would definitely help with that or just optional tutorial stuff.

I hope we're not forgetting that Pokemon is just as much for (if not more for) children than adults. If it's a child's first Pokemon game the tutorials really need to be there or else they'll constantly be begging Mom or Dad to pass a section for them when they can't figure out where to go or how to win a battle... I've seen a lot of kids playing Pokemon, it's pretty much the game of choice on DS.

It would perhaps be more interesting if they released 2 versions of the game every time, one geared toward adults and one geared toward children. They wouldn't have to change much and with digital distribution and proper labeling it could work out really well? It's too much trouble for them to bother, of course. But if the userbase is 50% adults and 50% children I'd think it would be worth it...

Not to mention I'm sure a lot of reason people couldn't get into S/M/US/UM is because it's more "straight to the point" compared to previous pokemon games. As for the starters, the last one looks like something I seen from a romhack years ago..

There's a good balance of children and adult consideration that they haven't put much thought into with S/M/UM/SM imo. I haven't been able to finish the last 2 generations of games, just felt like the formula got old and they hadn't polished the annoying bits much. UM/SM streamlined some stuff, but really when they just re-released the same game that could've been fine with a proper patching system, I'd had enough of handheld pokemon. Guess they've been doing that for years but, I never really cared until this last generation. Maybe I'm old, gotta accept that and move on at some point. I've had Pokemon around since I was a kid, and they're still for the kids. If they wanted the adult audience there's a really easy way to capture them in making a game with the first 2-300 pokemon and focusing on what we remember, but they don't do that. Don't think we're thought of that much.

This will get a pass just for being on console really as long as they put some effort into it and it's like the handheld games instead of stuff like Colosseum and the like.

I'd like them to play with typing/stereotypes more. Plenty of type combos that haven't been done yet. Switch it up where you don't see a rock or steel type and immediately say, it must be tanky. Have the starting route have something other than normal/grass/flying/bug in it. Kinda sucks knowing you catch all the early species just to abandon them at lvl 15-20 once they've evolved because their typing/move set/stats make them useless to take any further.

The third pokemon in that set of screenshots doesn't look like a water type to me.

In Sun/Moon's defense, it did give the series the most adorable starter, if not most adorable pokemon of all time.

I'm surprised you all lasted that long even. I was sick of the formula after Gold and Silver. Well, that and a lot of the Pokemon designs started to look dumb.

I just hope this game isn't just "Pokemon on the Switch," and they actually change things a bit.

One thing I've thought the game could play with is dual-type moves. Where stuff like Scald and Muddy Water could have 2 types for damage calculations.

Flying Press from Hawlucha works this way although for purposes of STAB and type boosting items it's considered pure Fighting instead of Fighting/Flying.

I'd actually like to see more type trade-off moves like Roost. People keep asking to make it more difficult for the non kids playing it, this could be one way around it.

I'm not talking about major damage and then atk decreases 2 stages. I would like to see a grass move that halves all fire type moves for 1 turn but makes you ground element in the process, or a normal type move that will always be super effective but also make you weak to the element you just used.

So has Nintendo ever gone on record as to why they phased out the classic 6 Pokemon 1v1 format for official tournaments?

Honestly now that battle sim is a thing I'm kinda done with the handhelds. I stopped playing sun/moon almost right after I finished the story.

I think pokemon powercreep for 1v1 got to the point that unless you happened to be running a gimmick like Shuckle that there wasn't enough real strategy involved and it became 'who gets set-up first'.

Thats still true to some extent in doubles, but in singles you don't have the extra action luxury to set up stuff like Trick Room or field effects like you do in doubles without risking you getting OHKO or severly damaged on turn 1.
