Fairly certain Drai will be signed at or above $8M AAV. Sounds crazy on a nominal basis, but you have to look at it on a % of cap basis; I'm sure his agent is pushing the same angle.

Matt Greene and Niemi both cleared waivers

My sense is Draisaitl ask on an 8 year deal could push 9m per season. Oilers I'd guess would think 7-8 range based on comps
Above $8mil at this point wouldn't surprise me. Potentially $33~$34mil in capspace taken up by 4 players. Welp Edmonton, it was fun. You'll be a good team but you'll never have the money to get the depth to be legitimately competitive for the cup.

Chicago fucked themselves over by taking up a sizeable chunk of their cap to a select few players. Surely no one would make this mistake again.
Chiarelli: "Hold my beer".
The idea works if your players are in their prime and have good prospects in the farm. I guess.
But it hasn't for Chicago ever since Kane+Toews signed those big contracts. 3 cups with good salaries using spare space on pivotal depth players -> huge pay increases -> nothing since. Chicago could have easily been a dynasty team given how good their core is. Pittsburgh is a great example (granted they have the best player in the game and another who's in the top 10 if not arguably in the top 5) of the star players having reasonable contracts allowing the team to have enough money to get a bunch of depth pieces paired with some talented youngsters.
I hate to admit it but given who is still signed and who's UFA/RFA on PIT, they're primed to 3peat next year. Sure, they have to sign some big names like Kunitz or Sheary or etc, but when you have Crosby setting the salary bar at a certain level, PIT has the leverage in both saying "this is how much we pay the best player, what makes you think you deserve something close to it?" as well as the league-wide reputation as a team that is primed to keep winning thus bringing in players who'd take a pay cut at a chance to play on a sure-fire contender.
I was going to say that Crosby is 10 years older then McJesus so in 10 years time Edmonton could have the cap space to surround McDavid and win a cup or two as the cap gradually goes up. But given that McDavid's contract is limited to 8 years, he'll probably demand another increase when this contract expires and just continue to fuck Edmonton over lol
No amount of money will make living in Edmonton okay. Lol.

When crosby and malkin signed their contracts, they too took up a hefty portion of the cap though.
I think the big difference is in who else the team has signed. Pit only has Kessel and Letang as other players who currently are paid over $5mil. But Chicago also has Saad, Hossa, Seabrook and Crawford. So ultimately Chicago has more cap space spent on fewer players (and more cap spent on individual players comparatively too at that) which is more or less why they're in the bind that they are.
And then Edmonton's situation I've already talked about before, they're royally fucked by Lucic and Nuge's contract mainly because of how overpaid both currently are. Not to mention how many other players are due for pay raises on that roster over the next year or two.
Toews and Kane's contracts take up 15.22% of the cap when they were signed.
Malkin's contract takes up 14.77% of the cap, Crosby 14.5%.
Its slightly less, but at the time those contracts were signed, they still took up a significant chunk.

you cant use 5 mil as your cutoff though. In 2010 (the first year Malkin and Crosby are gettin PAAAAAAAID), the salary cap was 56.8 mil. In 2017, it was 73 mil, an increase of about 28.5%. Take your 5 mil from today, reduce it by that amount, and you get roughly 3.9 mil.
Jordan Staal 4m
Kunits 3.25
Gonchar 5m
Orpik 3.75
Swiss Cheese 5m
Letang gets a raise to 3.5m next season too.
If you use 2018's 76m cap, that 5 mil from today becomes a 3.7m equivalent percentage of 2010. Yes, the Hawks are in a worse position today, but Pittsburgh's cap crunch in 2010 wasnt exactly all roses.
I think what nynja fails to account for is after sid and geno signed the cap continued to raise notably where as when toews and Kane signed, the cap began leveling off and climbing more slowly
Yes, it went up so rapidly, they had to lock out the players and scale it back lol.
Scott Hartnell's contract was bought out.
