Reading an article on The Ringer, this is written (and now directed) by the same guy who wrote The Last Stand, Simon Kinberg.

He completely butchered the Dark Phoenix storyline last time around, so Fox thought it was a good idea to let him do it again?

He also wrote DoFP, Apoc, & the FF reboot. Fox-Marvel employed him as their Feige since First Class which means he's also partially responsible for Deadpool and Logan.

X-Men go on mission to save astronauts from solar flare wave
Jean gets hit with solar flare but doesn’t die, seems to have been Phoenix
Alien Jessica Chastain shows up and starts whispering to her about new powers
Jean begins to hear the thoughts of her father, who Charles had told her was dead
Oh shit
Jean tracks down her father but finds out he’s a piece of shit that hated Jean and blamed her for her mother’s death. Charles had been lying to her for years trying to protect her.
Beast has a chance to shoot Jean with a tranquilizer but Charles stops him.
Mystique tries to talk to Jean but she goes crazy and accidentally kills Mystique.
After Mystique’s funeral the X-Men are split into Team Save Jean and Team Kill Jean
Beast recruits Magneto to try to kill Jean but they are not successful. Alien Jessica Chastain shows up with an alien army trying to kill Jean in the process to steal the power of Phoenix.
X-Men reunite to drive back the aliens.
Police and army are tired of their shit and show up and arrest all the X-Men.
All X-Men including a now comatose Jean are put on a train to be transported to prison.
Alien Jessica Chastain shows up again trying to get Jean again.
X-Men fight her off. Jean wakes up and flies with Chastain up into the orbit and explodes, killing them both.
Charles decides to retire. School is renamed the Jean Grey School For Gifted Youngsters.

After Xavier retires, he's off on his own. Magneto finds him and joins him at a table at some outdoor cafe. Magneto says that Charles once saved him and offered him a place to stay so he wants to do the same. He also tries to get Charles to play chess with him and while Charles is reluctant at first, he eventually gives in. I didn't get he impression that they intend to travel the world exactly.

I just got back from this. I don't think it deserves as bad as the reviews it's getting but it was still a disappointment for me. Definitely the weakest of the Mcavoy/Fassbender era or whatever you want to call it but I wouldn't call it a dumpster fire or anything. What bothered me the most is they completely altered the story of Dark Phoenix. I understand they can't include certain characters and events because they were never introduced in previous X-men movies but they changed so much and made shit up that never happened in the original comic. The reason I said it doesn't deserve as bad reviews is that the narrative (as modified as it was) flowed pretty well. With all the reshoots this went through whoever edited this thing did a damn good job with whatever they gave him. I'm just sad because this wasn't even remotely close to being as epic as it should have been. The Dark Phoenix saga is one of the greatest storylines in comic history and it's ashame they couldn't do better by it. If you really want to see it don't pay full price. AMC has a $5 movie day or you could go to one of those privately owned theaters that have discounted ticket prices.

Sophie Turner is so bad it's cringe-inducing at times and even Jessica Chastain can barely manage to show some life. 3 of us ended up going last night and I was the only one who made it all the way through and I had to grit it out. My buddy Jay found it a better use of his time to wander around the theater looking at the upcoming posters and hitting ineffectually on the female employees. Apocalypse, which is barely watchable imo is a good movie next to this abomination. DO NOT PAY MONEY TO SEE THIS. No amount is worth it.
