Article I read this morning said police were able to locate Paddock's hotel room relatively quickly because the gunfire set off the room's smoke alarm, and they followed that to find him.
I think the thing that's pissing me off the most right now is people (in general, not in this thread) who just say "gun control laws won't work - evil exists, it always exists"
That's it? That's your response? Just give up? Maybe stricter gun controls laws wouldn't help. But for fuck's sake we have to try something. Are you just saying, "Hey, it's a fact of life in America. I give up"? Because I don't accept that. I don't accept that we need to live in a country where 59 people will die in a mass shooting and we'll take it as par for the fucking course. If you think gun control laws won't work, then what will? What's your contribution? What's your solution? What can we try that might work?
Just watched Jimmy Kimmel's response and as predicted, lots of comments on youtube (appropriate for this forum!) said exactly that. And I just wanted to fucking scream at them THEN WHAT THE EVER-LOVING FUCK ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT. Fine, let's pretend stricter gun control laws won't work, let's pretend you aren't just towing the partisan line and you honestly believe this shit. Then What. ARE. YOU. SUGGESTING. WE. FUCKING. DO. INSTEAD?
Nothing. Not a damn thing. Because you've given up on America and you think this shit is just peachy-keen a-ok fine. Children without parents, dead police officers, terror on a daily basis - all of this is fine by you as long as you get to keep your AK-47. Fuck. You.
(again, not, not, NOT directed at anyone in this thread. pls excuse the livejournal-esqueness of this post)
Devils advocate here but similar "logic" well has been used throughout history. People's desire to do something in an emergency often outweighing the desire to do something helpful has often been played upon. One of the biggest flops from we have to do something in recent history has been post 911 airport security/TSA. Which has basically become the poster child for security theater and arguably made actual security worse and almost certainly resulted in more travel related deaths. It's not enough to have good intentions and do something hoping it helps nor is it enough to apply laser focus to certain parts while ignoring the bigger picture and if it helps/hurts
Side note feels weird all this is in the Terrorism thread. I get why the original story is since well things like this often are but we have recently active gun violence AND gun control threads
Please stop bringing up ak47's lol.
Using progun logic then drugs, prostitutes, gambling, abortion, etc should all be legal. Cause people will still figure out a way.
Fair enough, but doesn't that bring up an interesting point? We can regulate shoes and shampoos but we can't regulate guns, lol
Trevor Noah had a really good bit on this (or was it Stephen Colbert?) when he pointed out that we're now considering regulating hotel security more heavily but no one is willing to look at the gun issue
Total number of guns found in the hotel room is now 23.
Officially was shooting for about 9 minutes, he set up cameras both inside and outside the room. Appears to have carried everything in in 10 suitcases.
Explains why he could consistently fire without overheating, dude fucking brought an armory with him.
That's actually a good argument for the majority of those things.
Drugs: A lot of the mystique and lure of drugs go away as soon as they're legal.

Prostitutes: Legalization and regulation brings it out from the shadows and makes it safer for both workers and customers who no longer have to worry about abusive pimps and being arrested.

Gambling: States where gambling is illegal most likely have a lottery system in place. What's the damn difference?
Abortion: Providing a medical facility to have it done is safer for women as a lot of back alley procedures involve poisoning themselves to cause a miscarriage.

He took up two room that had a door between them and broke out a windows in each room

If I had the ability to erase something from public discourse it would be this.
This is the exact type of shit that prevents common sense drug laws among other things. If little johnny OD'd on weed and advil it would take a brave stupid sort to tell the mother to her face that it's a tragedy that should have no bearing on legislation.
Maybe not the best example.
