People feeling like they don't have a place is a problem, yes, but forcing Bob to be a ditch digger because no one else in the colony is a ditch digger isn't suddenly going to make him a happy person. There's also the question of what happens when colonies continue to grow due to birth rates outpacing deaths. Bored people gonna fuck, especially if this also demands technological regression.

Of course, it's also important to analyze why people may feel out of place in today's society, too. Poverty rates too high? Minimum wage too low? Too many bodies and not enough jobs to go around, threat of automation aside? Parents having to work too much just to get by? Education being too subpar to even inspire someone toward a particular path? Heck, higher learning being too expensive? Cutting arts programs first when schools see financial trouble really the way to go? And this is really just scratching the surface before getting into things like location and racial aspects.

One day, barring major catastrophe, society is going to have to get over itself and acknowledge that not everyone is going to have to work and thus earn their keep. Those that do will either be doing so out of personal enjoyment or a sense of obligation to society at large.

If digging that ditch is crucial to the success of the colony and Bob gets recognition and a modicum of respect for the vital role he's fulfilling, Bob will come home dirty and exhausted every day but he'll be a happier person than if he was working retail or some 9 to 5 office job where no one even knows his name aside from the payroll staff.

When the colony expands too much you go to war with the other colonies. This unifies the community around a common cause, one that offers a chance for earning distinction and respect while also serving as something greater than yourself that is worth dying for. You want to talk giving people a purpose, defending the people you love is a hell of a purpose to give someone, a purpose they will take to with such ferocity that they are willing to fight and die for it.

The goal isn't to stop people from ever killing one another. That's a fool's errand that outright denies the reality of the human animal. The goal is to minimize the occurrence of self-harming behavior directed at the tribe as a whole. Murdering the enemy tribe is normal and expected. Murdering your own tribe is aberrant and dangerous.

hm, you admit that eventually people will only work if they have some sense of obligation OR doing something for personal enjoyment [that is worthwhile to society]

but I'm not sure you properly reflect on that when coming up with questions in the former paragraph. Couldn't it just be that many of these people who feel out of place in today's society because they have no sense of obligation to society AND/OR will never have anything worthwhile to contribute that they also enjoy doing?

perhaps this is a feature of our society and not a bug that needs fixing ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (it seems that solutions to the bug cause bigger problems than the bug caused in the first place, lul)

You all just don't understand that once women are obeying the tribal patriarch again, it will work. Hard to feel detached from society when your wives and daughters have to depend on you.

Expanding education options should ideally help to curb those who feel like they can't find a place, but the current trend where people should be expected to have their life path figured out by 18 and be ready for the world by 21 or so is naturally flawed when that person literally doesn't know at 18 and needs more time to explore their options. Nonetheless, I have no doubt there are people who still wouldn't find an ideal career and, presuming we're at the end point I implied, it's not an actual loss to society.

There's also those more on the poverty side of the spectrum working 2 full-time shifts a day over 2-3 jobs and basically have no time to be people since weekends then become required time to shop, do laundry, take care of their place, and then some. Having been in a position like that before, it isn't really fun and certainly gets exhausting over time even if people genuinely appreciated what I did. Life literally being wake up, go to work, come home, sleep, repeat is not living. You can't cultivate a social life. If you have kids, you're honestly not being much of a parent. Part of the disconnect a lot of boomers are having with today's generation is that while their daddy comfortably provided with a single 9-5'er job alone, families today aren't so lucky.

When talking about stuff like this in older threads, one of my prevalent points has been that the minimum wage has not properly kept up with inflation since the late 70's. If we weren't Reaganomics'd in the 80's with a dab of Bush after, we might actually be fighting more for $20 instead of $15, and even that's still lower than what it should've been. Instead, wealth has been consistently shifting upward, making life more difficult for those on the bottom rungs of the ladder. Perhaps what I should've said is in that distant future, money won't be as important to survival because survival is pretty much guaranteed thanks to technological advances.

try explaining a post-labor society, not the nuts and bolts of it because no one has any idea at this point what those will be, but just the very concept of it, to your friends and co-workers. watch their minds melt. i've tried this at work and it's always hilarious.

The natural endpoint of a post-labor society is terrible fashion, bad voice acting, and Blitzball.

    Truly a dystopia.

I like how your solution to mass shooting is to ritualized war as a population control for your own village.

I will never understand how someone feels like they have no purpose in life and how murdering people or suicide is the cure. WTF

First of all, I thought I was gonna have to poke the golden googs a lot longer before he laid that egg.

Second, how sad it must be to live believing that empathy doesn't exist and that people can only care about each other if their lives depend on it.
