I come out for "government censorship" (in reality I would like to see the private sector wake the fuck up and handle this themselves) because news flash, nothing else is fucking working.

The people who get indoctrinated into doing these kinds of things do it because the people they trust and idolize tell them that everyone else is lying to them. At that point, to me, they're lost as a person and have no value. Call me harsh if you want, or better yet show me an example of more than like one in a billion of them that successfully reformed, and maybe I'll rethink my position. That said, at that point what else can you do? The only answer is to prevent this trash from ever reaching these people in the first place. Trust me, they'll find something better to do. Like, anything at all.

These groups are already ostracized in the public eye, so they rely on spreading information online to recruit. Starving them out that way would work and I refuse to believe otherwise until I've seen it tried and failed.

Direct incitement to violence is already not covered under freedom of speech. Prolonged exposure to pitched rhetoric dehumanizing "the other side" will naturally cause violent individuals to emerge. This phenomenon is exhibited not only by well-known cesspools such as 8chan and Infowars, but is also actively being driven by online echo chamber algorithms such as Facebook's designed to drive engagement. This isn't just limited to right wing fascists however. Left-wing terrorism emerges under the exact same conditions. I despise the current administration, but at the same time the environment even on the left is getting really worrisome in terms of the pitched rhetoric of dehumanization.

Freedom of speech only applies to government entities, there is nothing keeping any private body from regulating speech of their customers or employees however they want.

Im not denying that but government regulation of speech which a ton of people in my feeds have been calling for is not the answer. Now If social media companies want to crack down and deplatform the alt right then yeah go for it.

I haven't seen any calls for Government Regulation of Speech in my twitter feed so I'm not 100% sure what the calls look like (80% of my twitter feed is artwork) but *Clears out throat*

What needs to happen is an investigation into hate speech. The house should set up a committee to investigate hate speech in various platforms (Incl. Twitter, Facebook, and Youtube) and it should identify patterns of said hate speech. They should then get with these companies and in clear terms tell them to fix their shit or they'll start cracking down on them. Basically encourage these companies to more rigorously enforce their own Terms of Service.

Now there is the question of what the fuck you do about 8chan and Daily Stormer and etc... but that's an entirely different set of obstacles to climb over.

Yeah, services failing to enforce their own ToS has pretty much been a problem since the AOL days. If a sub is involved, it means lost revenue. Some like to argue that the controversy people bring generates traffic, and thus more revenue from ads and the like. Which winds up sounding a lot more like money being a priority over facilitating hospitable environments, or at the very least, curbing deliberately hateful and antagonistic propaganda. Unfortunately, we're still living in a culture where people think it's cool to demonize people based on their race, sexuality, religion, gender, disabilities, nationality, and appearance. Or people think it's perfectly acceptable to get girls blackout drunk/drugged out of their mind for an easy lay. Or that "No!" doesn't mean no and is just a signal to try harder. Boys will be boys. (Cyber-)Bullying isn't a big deal. Stuff like this persists precisely because "free speech" or looking the other way hasn't helped. Things like #MeToo caught fire precisely because it wasn't the status quo and some gigantic shitlords finally got their comeuppance. But then we also elect a president that embodies all of this shit with the added veneer of wealth and GOP bootstrap-ism (and the irony of inheritance/corruption).

Basically, there should be no surprise behind why some elements of the left may be leaning toward more authoritarian practices. They see that cheaters do win. They see humongous gaps in wealth. They see people dying, or are suffering themselves, because they can not afford healthcare. All of this has happened under the alleged umbrella of freedom, but if it isn't working, what then? Politics working at a snail's pace certainly doesn't aid others in the moment. We're observing flaws like the Electoral College, McConnel fucking Obama, gun reform not going at the pace it needs to, or Graham single-handedly shooting down legislation not because it's what the people want, it's what THEY want. We're kind of past the point of people just hating the players, they're hating the game, too.

I'm more looking towards shit like Tumblr which had an issue with child porn bots and didn't bother addressing it until they got taken off the Apple App Store over it and within weeks had software that would recognize nudity and flag said post. Same shit could be used for other types of posts.

And its when you see how fast stuff could be implemented it makes you wonder what the fuck it'll take to get these companies to do it. Which is why people on the left are advocating for government regulation to achieve it.

I mean the first case is I'm assuming the Nazi PUG video which was tried under scotland's telecommunication act of 2003 which ended up in him eating a $1,100 which in all honestly seems pretty relaxed? I don't know how it affects his record but in all honestly if you follow the guy he's kind of a piece of shit. Or became a piece of shit? IDK the guy joined UKIP which has its own problems with extreme nationalism.

8chan is its own problem and is notorious for hosting child abuse material (Its why it won't appear on google's search) and last I remembered person who runs that website is in the Philippines. Either way I doubt anyone will be touching that website for a while.
