ArcLight in LA started the trend of assigned seating in my area, then Muvico came in and did the same. AMC, Regal, Cinemark all followed suit when they saw their attendance dropping. It also went hand-in-hand with all the theaters switching to Digital and upgrading older sound systems. There are a select few theaters that have the dine-and-watch setup, but I can't be bothered to drive to Marina del Rey or up the highway when I don't partake in theater concessions.
Hooray for competition trying to win over my money.

$5 matinee, $7 large popcorn and drink combo. small beach town in nc. nearby town slightly larger is double those prices and no better seating/quality.

random movie theater question, you think I should take my 77 year old father in-law to see Dunkirk at a real imax? i mean a real imax not just some stupid theater chain with a large screen. I have no idea if real imax is dangerous for the elderly or not.

Dangerous for the elderly, wat? It's just a giant screen with enhanced sound. Dangerous for an infant/child sure I'd say as they're still developing their hearing. I will never forget that shit. When uh...Dark Knight Rises came out, this dad with a 2-3 mo. old in there. Kid was screaming it's lungs out. He ended up leaving. I was like wow, f this guy. What an idiot, how selfish. But if anything I'd say if your FIL has bad hearing he'd probably appreciate how loud it is.
