I honestly thought myself far more in the conservative bent than policy questions put me (moderate conservative/close to classical liberal).
People toss a lot of political jargon around, but don't actually know what the words mean.
Edit: If it's self-described, I'd be willing to take a bet that the bulk of that group fall in the category of not knowing the difference between conservative, classical liberal, moderate right, far right, etc.... and just think, "Well I ain't no dirty stinkin' libruhl, so ah mus' be c'nserv'tive."
