Election results seemed to indicate that the conservative "never trump" movement is very much a figment of the elite's imagination.

90% of Republicans who voted in 2016 voted for Trump, which is exactly in line with every other modern candidate.

Voter turnout was up from 2012.

Never Trumpers either aren't a significant population or are actually a "never gonna admit I voted for Trump" movement

Possibly, though many conservatives have been leaving the Republican party to Libertarian or Independent (I am not, and never have been, a Republican). I also suspect that, had a mildly less awful candidate than Hillary been put forward, or anything approaching a moderate Democrat been put forward, there would have been a lot more movement to the D party.

You also had a fair number of the far right who didn't vote for Romney, who likely returned to Trump: just because the total % is the same, doesn't mean it's the same people who are in that %.

Edit: Should also note, 20% of Trump's voters had a negative opinion of him... they just hated Hillary more (which I disagree with, but can understand). 57% of white folks thought Trump was dishonest and untrustworthy, but 70% thought that about Hill Dog. You had about 1/4 Trump voters saying he wasn't qualified to be President-- again, they just hated Hillary more.

Some degree of Republican swing (more far-right, fewer conservatives/moderates) for Trump, some degree of Republican shrinkage/demographic shift, and a very large degree of "Anyone but Hillary" account for a lot of people not liking Trump at all, but him still getting elected.

Manafort is suing the DoJ for expanding (exceeding) their investigation beyond the 2016 election.

I had to explain to my mother that the Japanese internment camps were a bad thing.

This is the sort of shit you have to face when dealing with people who only read BB and Fox News.

This is why, even though I consider myself to be conservative, I have not voted for a Republican in a long time.

That's fine, but "Never Trump" isn't "Not Trump except the only time that mattered."

The "movement" doesn't exist or doesn't matter.

Out of curiosity: is that self-described conservatives, or is that people who were identified as conservative after answering policy/political issues?

I honestly thought myself far more in the conservative bent than policy questions put me (moderate conservative/close to classical liberal).

People toss a lot of political jargon around, but don't actually know what the words mean.

Edit: If it's self-described, I'd be willing to take a bet that the bulk of that group fall in the category of not knowing the difference between conservative, classical liberal, moderate right, far right, etc.... and just think, "Well I ain't no dirty stinkin' libruhl, so ah mus' be c'nserv'tive."

People who self identify as conservative in the pop-poly sci sense of the word, Republicans.

Finally got the time to sit down and read the article.

It was pretty depressing, but the explanation of how the author got the access at the end was worth it. Protip: If you want access, apparently you just have to show up and they're too incompetent to deny you permission to be there.

PS. It's New York Magazine, not the New Yorker

I was wondering how long it would take to get to a no true Scotsman take, but I figured that would do it.
