It's completely dead. Crunchyroll and Funimation have annihilated the fansub scene. Only maybe three or four English groups still do any work at all, and they primarily do the higher-quality BD releases that usually don't come out in the US until a dub has been made.
It's most noticeable when a series is NOT licensed by one of the two giants. This season Fate/Apocrypha and Symphogear are both WEEKS behind because of the lack of speed subbing we used to get back in the day.

What you talking about Willis?? UTW has been releasing Apocrypha the day after for most the series as far as I know (actually reformed because of the series I think). Just released 13 yesterday. I mostly go thru deadfish which is just a reencoder but they find tons of various fansub groups to try and get the best ones. Except the bakedfish side which just gets everything off of Horriblesubs because those clowns do almost everything. And Commie is apparently still around and releasing Sympogear a day or 2 aftger airing and also just released episode 13
