if i had heard of a banned book as a kid (can't recall any) that would only have intrigued me to find a copy and read it to see what the fuss what about. at least while tv and vidya rotted my brain as a kid i managed to maintain a love of literature. haven't found a tv show, movie, game or whatever yet that surpasses my favorite books.

I absolutely love the comedies, but when I look at the "best" I look at the depth of the characters, plot, soliloquies, etc.

Midsummer Night's Dream is funny as shit, but it's like comparing Happy Gilmore to the Shawshank Redemption. Both good films, and both completely achieved their goals, but not on the same field of design.

    yes it is

and his comedies are grand but his dramas are some of the greatest stories told in the history of the species. crossdressing doesn't really rate when contrasted.

I actually had a hard time thinking of a comedy that was good enough for Midsummer, I figured that one was at least one most people here liked a lot.

    Rushmore works, too.

Aerosmith’s “Dude Looks Like a Lady” was the number one song on billboard for like 500 weeks

No it was fucking awful because all the kids would stumble over themselves with the old timey English and it would take forever to get through one single scene.

if the point of making kids read books is to get them to learn to love reading, those books fail miserably. only kids who already read a lot and can handle such subjects comfortable will usually find that enjoyable reading. most kids are just going to read that crap and never want to read again, which is a tragic shame. it's not like there's a shortage of authors that have captivated people today. For crying out loud, harry potters first book has sold over 120 million copies, making it the bestselling non religious book of all time. it might not have the "classic charm and intrigue" (blegh) of the scarlet letter, but it sure is a heck of a lot less dry - and encourages kids to read more stories and broaden their knowledge, not for grades, but for fun.

At the high school level (when you are reading stuff like 1984) the point of reading literature isn't just to make kids like reading so that they read more. That either worked (in grade school) or it didn't. Students are learning to consume media actively. You aren't just reading a story to be entertained, you are reading a story because it is supposed to say something to you. You read classics because usually because they had something important to say about the human experience. Thus why they are considered classic. Fun to read and popular is not the same as meaningful and profound.

This same principle applies to all media actually, it's just that visual media is less likely to say anything meaningful and substantive when most consumers consume it with the explicit goal of turning their brains off.

Does anyone know how you get the good ending to Romeo & Juliet?

The one where they live and you get the infinite rocket launcher.
