The proper way to think about statues is to think about what they are commemorating.

Nobody honestly believes that a statue of Jefferson or Washington is commemorating slaveowning, and nobody honestly believes that a statue of Robert E Lee is commemorating founding the U. of Virginia or whatever. You tear them down if the reasons they were erected are bad - and especially if the reasons were bad back when they were erected in the first place.

150 years of building confederate monuments

The point of this chart is the explosion of confederate memorials during Jim Crow, and then another surge (especially of naming schools) during forced integration of southern schools and the Civil Rights era.

These were erected as a means of codifying state-sanctioned subjugation of blacks. It's not particularly complicated.

Tuesday night, they removed all 4.

Chicago considering removing the Balbo statue (again) and renaming the street (again). Probably nothing going to happen (again).

If Mt. Vernon or Monticello are razed from this Earth all hell will break loose from architects across America. Those are some of the strongest and earliest examples of pure American architecture. The next best we got is Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, and Henry Hobson Richardson. Even the toppling of statues strikes a chord with me but I'm thinking too much about the sculptor/artist and not about the image the statue represents. I won't mind if Mussolini's gift to Chicago is removed from Grant Park, or the street is renamed to another famous Italian (Fermi plz). I'm just upset this is going to set a precedent for removing "controversial" art.

The last 1.5 years have been terrible for setting bad precedents.
