Sometimes we erect statues to commemorate the good things people did.

Sometimes we have to take them down for the bad things they did.

i doubt you possess either the logical capability or human empathy necessary to understand this but the insidious horrors of slavery do not end with the enslaved, it also turns masters into monsters. men like Washington who grew up with slavery were indoctrinated from youth that is was the natural order of things and an immutable aspect of their society, ones whose entire culture reinforced over and over again it was the way of a righteous world, not an evil to be made right. it was a world that poisoned the minds of all who lived in it, and Washington was no exception, he notably only coming around to the notion of freeing his slaves after being presented with northern ideas of abolition during his national endeavors, and after having led free black men during the Revolutionary War.

more practically as Zealot alluded to many of his slaves were Martha's property, she having been a wealthy widow who inherited them they were dower slaves that would revert to her husband's estate upon her death, he had little legal recourse (and less economic opportunity our first president's finances were not so good) to actually free many of them in his life though he clearly wanted to do so. but in his will he not only emancipated all the slaves he legally could, he sold off portions of his estate to educate the younger slaves in reading + writing + some useful profession and to provide a retirement stipend for the elderly and infirm slaves for the rest of their lives.

an institution such as slavery can never even approach morality, a right act can never absolve the wrong that came before, and whatever the difficulties Washington could have done more both personally and publicly to combat the peculiar institution. but Washington's lifetime evolution on slavery is exceptional simply because it is exceptional. no other slave-owning founding father even sniffed at freeing their slaves (including Jefferson and Madison who spoke so elegantly against it), you can count the number of plantation owners period who did so between 1776 and 1865 on not very many hands. to do so was to reject one's culture, one's society, the lies upon which your country was founded. it required a degree of moral courage most could never hope to find. the man whose statues you don't like did.

I mean when someone wins 408 more wars than George Washington while not owning slaves you gotta feel pretty confident.
