I'd stand by "Often", though not from a single experience. Multiple encounters, though?

Maybe my experiences with racists are abnormal, but most are ignorant more than hateful-- the Senator Byrd type. I mean, yeah, they have hate, but it's taught, not self-originated. It's the kind that, when presented with contrary experience, goes away (because most people value experience over theory. And it tends to evaporate by degrees-- "ALL BLACKS ARE DIRTY APES THAT NEED REMOVED FROM PURE WHITE SOCIETY" shifts to "Some blacks are okay, but others ARE DIRTY APES THAT NEED REMOVED FROM CIVIL SOCIETY" eventually shifts to, "Some people are jerks, and should not be part of civil society." It takes time, but it happens.

Iunno. Hate's hate. It hurts the hated, and it poisons the hater. There comes a point of "awful" where more doesn't matter; the KKK, the Nazis, I mean... do you really draw a meaningful line between them of "These are too evil for sammiches, but these guys are okay to give sammiches to?" If so, what's your criteria-- race-hate? White-based-race-hate? Do militant Black Panthers get sammiches?

I look at a Nazi, and I don't see a person worthy of hate-- I see an ideology worthy of hate, but a person in need of pity. Someone in need of help, because they are destroying themselves, and in the process, harming others. I reserve as much pity for their victims, and certainly acknowledge that those harmed by hate need help, too, and are more deserving of it. If I have the funds to sammichize the victims, or the Nazi, and not both, sure-- I help the victim first, and chat up the Nazi as I can. But at the end of the day, they're still people. Tragically broken people, who unleash pain on others. It's not okay.

I've just never known a racist who looked at confrontation, and said, "Well damn! These guys beat us up. Maybe I shouldn't hate them so much." I've known many who experienced unexpected kindness and joy, and said, "Huh. Maybe they aren't so bad after all."
