Uh, Scarjo is not Asian enough for ghost in the shell. She did fine imo, but her race is def not canon unless she takes mostly after one parent.

And keep in mind in the ScaJo movie, her human form is Japanese played by a Japanese actress.

That wasn't my point. My point was that, in canon, the robot form is asian. They ditched that in favor of appealing to a larger audience. I get the reason why, and concede the movie was alright, but it's still not canon and is by definition...white washing? She is Caucasian right? Lol

Sure it's a robot and she's even changed bodies before in the movie and anime, but they were all most definitely Asian, even if the creator wants to walk that back for the fat $$$.

Plus you know, being designed and made by Asians to work in an Asian society. It's not a stretch, and until the movie they made no effort that I'm aware of to dispel the notion of that Major with the Asian name being well... an asian.

And her NAME is the human name, which was played by an Asian in the film. That's not proof of breaking canon at all.

Just admit it is ambiguous enough that it shouldn't fucking matter. In fact, it is so ambiguous, that no, you are not ruining canon by having her robot form be white.

I concede that I can see the wriggle room they used to escape the white washing comments, however they went out of her way to give the Major a backstory focused on her Asian backround, as well as mentioning how she came to get her new body and how it was designed, and after decades of media on the universe the first mention we get of the Major not being Asian is AFTER they already casted one of the most recognizable white women in movies today for the role.

You can take that how you want. It wasn't malicious I'm sure, but I feel you're deluded if you think they didn't go this route for $$$ and not because they're sticking to canon that Majors robot body was in fact not made to look asian.

I mean you do realize that the tv show, manga, and anime all have various origin versions to begin with, as do in most anime? There are so many plot inconsistencies in all versions because they are all really separate entitities.

This would be like you trying to tell me Tenchi Muyo Universe is canon but the OVA is not. You can't do that shit in anime/manga.

Second season of stand alone complex. The episode also gave backstory for Kujo I think his name was? They show you her human body, explained how it got fucked up, and how she was one of the first to make the jump to full cyborg.

Also canon-cy doesn't seem real relevant when in any incarnation of the anime they never make an effort to illustrate her as non asian. There were episodes in the first season of her at war, I'm on mobile so I can't look it up but who did she fight for i that war? I'd imagine it's Japan, but maybe it's the UN. Either way, just more mounting evidence that she's either Asian, or a Caucasian living her whole life in Asia which isn't impossible, just unlikely. But you are right, it doesn't really matter lol.

I can't rememeber where I found the article since it was years ago, but the writer had interviewed and questioned people on the street in Tokyo how they felt about Scarjo as the Major, and not a single person gave a shit. Some of them even preferred a big name white actress in the role because it brought more eyes to the product.
