Also canon-cy doesn't seem real relevant when in any incarnation of the anime they never make an effort to illustrate her as non asian.

The point is they never specifically make her cyborg body Asian either. So it can easily be argued that it could go either way. fyi I am not arguing that cyborg body IS white. I am arguing that her cyborg body is so ambiguous that it really isn't going against the story if they make it white.

To go off my other example: the Aladdin remake.

Agrabah is a made up kingdom that seems to be a mix between the Middle East and India. I'm not go to argue which is more likely, but I think it can't be denied there was a lot of influence from both regions.

People still pissed Jasmine will be played by a British Indian.

Now, can it be argued she was Middle Eastern? Yes. But this is another case of ambiguity where it really could go either way. Especially since the palace is heavily influenced by Indian architecture. So she could also be argued as being Indian.

Should also be noted Aladdin in the original tale was Chinese, but no one gives a fuck he's not being played by a Chinese.

It is really hard to find, actually. From a quick google search the only legit ones I see were Angelina Jolie in A Mighty Heart and Kevin Spacey in Pay it Forward.


It seems the biggest whitewashing happens against Asian characters.


Come to think of it, there are wayyyyy more black actors playing white characters than the reverse. Which I am 150% behind, and never quite got into the whole "race needs to match the character" thing because the theater has said, "fuck you," to that for forever. But it's an interesting thing to put into perspective.

Not sure don't pay enough attention but I bet most studios are probably pretty keen on not doing that.

Most of what I think of is the uproar that happens basically anytime a film with Egyptians is made and then the invariable debates on historically what skin color they were. Last one I remember was Gods of Egypt though tbf it was a terrible movie and seeing an "Egyptian" with a Scottish accent was all kinds of messed up

Edit: so yeah quick search looks like most of it happened way back. Nowadays it's usually no name movies or middle eastern, Indians and Asians.
