I wouldn't even call it damage control. Berkley has always had violent protests. Occupy groups from Oakland and Berkley basically took everything Occupy was trying to get out message wise and destroyed it with the constant vandalism, damage, and near riots. You can even go back to the Vietnam era and Berkley has been like this for protests. I think this is the first time any elected official there has actually spoken against the violent extreme left.

To answer your question of where my bias in this situation comes in I haven't heard of a known left or centrist based bot network that's still operating since the election ended. And we're talking pussy hat numbers within a day.

Demonstrations and other uses of your right to free speech and your right to protest should be non-violent. At the same time, no one should need to apologize for using violence to defend themselves or others from ethnic cleansing. And yes, we sort of passed the "imminent and immediate danger" threshold for self-defense two exits back when a bunch of Nazis march down the street with tiki torches and cosplayed as riot cops to beat up black people.

I wish antifa didn't resort to violence and didn't have to resort to violence because ideally in a civil society there should be a monopoly of violence by the sovereign. But the sovereign should be utilizing that monopoly to protect vulnerable communities.

Commitment to non-violent civil disobedience is not incompatible with self-defense against those who espouse violence against you, and in the words of Comrade Romney even if things escalate into a violent confrontation the two camps start from, and remain in, morally different universes.
