I think this is pretty demonstrably untrue. One needs only look at games like WoW to realize that: both subscription based and littered with micro transactions, yet the playerbase is more toxic than ever.

It's the rise of Twitch culture that permeates all these popularized games that engenders these sorts of attitudes, IMO.

Yeah, subs do shit to curb bad behavior. And if anything, companies are incentivized to not ban/suspend problem players because it'd mean less money. The failure to uphold a ToS is probably one of the biggest problems among various big-name gaming circles.

Take off your rose-colored glasses. Gaming communities have always had a natural state of being absolute garbage. It takes moderation and cultivation to turn them into anything better.

No rose colored glasses here. There's always been toxicity in gaming, with different communities having different susceptibilities, but the rise of Twitch culture has absolutely made a visible impact, in my eyes, as someone who's played MMOs consistently and watched individual MMOs/servers' communities change over time.
