You joking me? You can't even say nigger on twitch without risking a perma-ban and only the most prolific of twitch streamers that bring in insane levels of revenue have the violations looked past. Someone subbing to someone like sodapopping or icepos with a message that says something racist almost always gets a wide-eyed reaction and instant panic followed by "cmon now none of that shit you're gonna get me in trouble" or some such variation if not an attempt to mute the sub sound. Nothing I have seen on twitch has come even remotely close to playing xbox online near a decade ago or even ffxi a decade ago. Go back in time and play call of duty online and keep a tally of how many times some 12 yr old screamers nigger at you and compare that to how many times you hear it on twitch and I'm sure in 10 minutes you will called it more than you would hear it on twitch in a year. I am referencing the actual streamer btw, not twitch chat. I mean hell man we had so much shit talking in ffxi that it escalated to irl meet ups a handful of times.
Why can't white people just let go of the N-word? Let black people have it.
Fine, but if they're taking away the N word we're taking affirmative action back.
If you don't think there's a specific culture in popularized Twitch streams, where a significant number of online players copy/paste their dumb vocabulary and mannerisms, I'm not sure what to tell you. Of course different Twitch feeds have different chats, depending on what they moderate, but online forums / chat / voice have little-to-no moderation at all, and then it becomes more noticeable.
WoW PvP forums became completely unreadable years ago because of it.
Edit: You're rather missing my point, panda, lol. I wasn't saying that Twitch popularized shit like the N-word amongst gamers.
Hip Hop/Rap are the #1 music genre in the country. If i'm not allowed to sing along to my favoritest of songs i'ma throw hands. It is rather odd imo that a word I hear on the radio or in music 50-100 times a day is an unspeakable evil.
Your point was that twitch has noticeably impacted the level of toxicity? I disagree with that, it's always been toxic imo if not more so in the past.
Subscription based games have a lot less South American "rat kids" playing in LAN cafes with their "HUEHUEHUE/JAJAJA concha tu madre puta mierda :v :v :v" spam.
As bad as that idiot TPing in Sun Rings complaining about the elitism of Kings and HNMLS was, he has nothing on your typical Peruvian or Brazilian cafe kid.
Case closed.
Memes are absolutely part of internet culture. You actually think that streamer emulation, which didn't exist popularly until Twitch, is having zero impact on gaming culture at large? It's made a larger subsect of people than normal completely insufferable, and idolizes these (generally) young men who, if you want to open that can of worms I wasn't initially talking about, absolutely perpetuate and normalize discriminatory and toxic behavior -- because the streamers, the idols, themselves, are not intelligent nor socialized enough to behave responsibly.
It's always existed, 100%, but gaming in general wasn't normalized until the past decade. Just because we were immersed in the toxic side of internet culture back in the early 2000s on FFXI and other places, doesn't mean it was as wide spread. It's naturally grown because the audience has multiplied, and now we have a wide swath of young people imitating these streamers who are (1) annoying, but more pressingly (2) often immaturely perpetuating discriminatory behavior. Pewdiepie, anyone?
but really I just wanted to rant initially about how stupid as fuck gaming language has become, which is absolutely because of streaming. PvEers aren't half as annoying as PvPers, because streaming is more popular amongst PvPers and PvP games.
Let's be real for a minute, communities are shit because they get too large. It's a lot harder to be a complete fuckwit and remain part of the community when you can't just fade into the crowd after talking shit. In a smaller community you either get branded as the village idiot or get run out of town.
I still don't understand people spending time watching other people play video games for any other reason than waiting their turn.
This is the heart of it. You used to be immersed in it because you, like all of us, were also a teenage shithead. Now that you're older you look at these kids and can't believe their behavior when I bet your LS had 3 dudes just like them.
This is exactly the same kind of thinking that leads people my mom's age to talk about how great stuff was when they were young because they knew their neighbors and could leave their doors unlocked, meanwhile black people were getting hit with hoses and dogs for daring to want equal rights.
Most people are assholes, there are more people than ever before and therefore there are more assholes. The ratio hasn't changed, just the volume.
