Call me less than convinced.
"Assault Rifles" are just semi automatic hunting rifles painted black. I do hope you understand this.
muh guns
...
It's not just you I'm referring to. A lot of the arguments here, and for a lot of things in general, is that it's not a perfect system, will not 100% work, so we should just move on.
Security checks at the airport aren't perfect, yet we still do them.
Hiring background checks aren't perfect, yet we still do them.
We license people to drive legally, yet we still require one to drive despite it not being a perfect system.
We still buy home security systems despite them not being able to handle every single case.
We'll never be perfect as human beings, yet we should still always strive to be better than we are.
The inconvenience is outweighed by the benefits, that's why we do it.
Thats what I was saying before, it applies to immigration as well, the thing is, most of the common sense laws are on the books, sometimes they aren't enforced (looking at you sanctuary cities), and someone like this dude ends up with guns when he clearly shouldn't have been able to aquire one.
Murder is already illegal, clearly, so I just don't see more laws helping that aren't anymore consquential than life in prison or death penalty.
I think the bigger issue is what Dimmauk said earlier about mental health, and helping figure out the root cause of the people snapping or their ideology pushing them to this is likely to be a greater benefit than any more laws, but that's just my opinion, tbh, tbf, ymmv, etc.
Common sense gun laws vs curing the nation's mentally ill.
We already have most of one, we feed the other problem with meds that may or may not be causing these instances
I'm not arguing against common sense gun laws, I dont know why you have to frame everything like that.
gun control is a tough issue. if only someone would simplify it by comparing it to cake
You keep coming back to this flawed position that current gun laws are good enough and they're not.
And the vast, vast, vast, vast majority of gun crime and violent crime in general has nothing to do with mental illness.
Addressing mental illness might put a dent in mass shootings after a few decades of intense focus but, as many are quite willing to point out, mass shootings only account for a small number of total gun crimes.
We only talk about gun ownership after mass shootings because it's the only time the issue gets any attention.
To be fair, in the past some of you guys loved to stress the importance of suicide statistics as well when we are talking about gun deaths. Could be argued these are instances of untreated mental illness or rather untreated negative mental states. To your credit you said gun violence and not gun deaths, but then again suicide is a crime and one that often uses a firearm.
