Fridge is warm for the second time in about as many months. Freezer is not forzen up anywhere, fan is running, compressor seems to be running. Looks like I have to buy a new fridge.

Speaking of freezer. New fridge's ice maker is leaking into the space under the ice maker tray. An inch of ice formed and it was a nightmare to remove it. Call samsung to get a dude to fix it.... 1yr Warranty ended may 1st. Pretty sure I bought the thing memorial day too. They want 80 for a technician, 160 for labor, and at least 300 for parts. Pass, I'll deal with a leaky ice maker.

so, i haven't really said much about it, but my health has taken a turn and i've been back on disability. i'm still technically employed, but it's looking more and more like i won't be able to make it back.

on top of that, my girlfriend's car got repo'd. she had a teller put it on autopay in person at the bank, but they fucked up, and she never double checked. the bank never left any voicemails, and sent a single email that looked like a phishing attempt. so we scrambled to put together a loan to refinance with my bank (who are awesome), and ended up paying more than $500 out of pocket (which does not go towards the loan) to get it back.

thinking we're in the clear, i get some routine maintenance that's been piling up on MY car done, to the tune of $300.

girlfriend is now having to call a tow because her car is outgassing burned popcorn smell, making rattling/growling noises, and refuses to go above 60. i don't know what the damage is, but it's probably something fucking major; based of her description i'm afraid it's something like her transmission.

    fucking god damn it.

Yeah but I like how forums viewed on this. I don't know why it's so hard to make a forum app that isn't fucking trash. Don't fix what ain't broke.

we're hoping it's something relatively minor like electrical; when she was waiting for the tow with the engine off, the lights were flickering in and out, and that the rattling/growling is just the tune-up she sorely needs.

but the tow truck guy said it sounded like transmission, too, so fuck.

on the bright side, i have about 4 grand in my 401k that i can close out if my employment ends.

Oh man don't do this unless you absolutely have to. You'll lose half in taxes and penalties on the cash out. And the power of compound interest can't be denied.

    Do. Not. Take. It. Out.

Leave that shit in there until you're 65.

I repeat. DO NOT TAKE IT OUT.

it's a roth, so taxes should already be paid, yeah?

and anyway, having that much in "liquid" assets disqualifies me from other assistance i might end up needing. we'll see. i may not have a choice. it's definitely a last resort.

i'm not so confident in its ability to stay afloat absent contributions, though. it's only had one month where it increased in value; it's been dropping pretty steadily since my contributions dried up. and actually, now that i think about it, i think that one month might have been from my paid time off contributing again. i'm just afraid if i leave it in there, it'll dwindle away to nothing and i'll still have bills to pay.

Yes, but if you are under 60 and are withdrawing earnings you pay income tax and a 10% early withdrawl penalty.

Can borrow against your contributions for things like a home purchasre or medical needs without penalty though. Not that you ever should since people easily need more than a million to retire on. People should be aiming for at least 2 milion.

    Dwindle away to nothing?

You haven't lost anything close to a meaningful portion of it. What are you invested in?

i guess it did go up last month. so maybe it was just a run of bad luck.

If this statement has what you're asking for, it looks like they've got me in:

    "International Equity"
    "Small Cap Blend"
    "Capital Preservation"

for my active core funds, which seems like it's more of a summary than specifics, but for my passive index:

    "SS Gaceq EX-US Idx K"
    "SS RSL Smmdcp Idx K"
    "SS S&P 500 Index K"
    "SS US Bond Index K"

I signed up for the managed portfolio because I fucking hate actually managing this sort of thing. i'm a terrible gambler.

What's the % charge for a managed portfolio. If it's higher than .16 you should do it yourself. Buy ETFs and walk away.

also, i don't know what ETFs are. i don't think you understand my loathing for managing this type of thing. at the skill level i can reasonably obtain, i'm basically playing roulette. i fucking hate roulette.

Educate yourself. It's not something you an afford to be lazy about. If/when you get another job with any type of 401k/retirement funding, read up on your investment options and what they mean.

The personal finance subreddit is an excellent resource as well. It really isn't that scary once you have a base understanding and there isn't a ton (or any) activity required on your part once you make your initial elections.

You said it better than I would.

You can reasonably obtain a good enough skill level to safely invest your money. Paying someone half a percent of your portfolio is an idiot tax you should never pay.

Those are both full coverage ETF's that target a retirement in 20XX year.

    Zet doesn't love a lean 401k investment
