Since I passed the bar almost 3 years ago I've been part of a process to become a special agent for the FBI. The time waiting between phases has been as much as 6 months in some cases, and in all that time I've tried not to put down roots or seek more than semi-permanent employment because I'd believed I would be called up to go to training and move afterward. I passed several written exams, the fitness test (the only candidate to pass from my group), a physical, multiple rounds of interviews, a polygraph, and had all of my friends and co-workers from the last 10 years questioned as part of my top secret security clearance background check. I was in training to take the fitness test one more time, as you're required to pass it twice before moving on to Quantico, and that was finally the absolute last step necessary before I would be cleared to move on.

Then at the start of last month I got a notice that as a result of my physical, they wanted me to retake the eye exam. I scheduled a test immediately and sent them the results.

Because of some difficulty when I was born, I have a misshaped cornea. I'll never see better than 20/25, even with correction. Even Lasik would just have me at 20/25 without lenses. Sans correction I'm around 20/40, 20/50. The FBI requires a minimum of 20/20 in at least one eye and no more than 20/40 in the other, after correction. The determination was made that 20/25 isn't good enough and I was just disqualified. They could have had me take the test first, before almost 3 years of processing?

So, time to figure out what to do next.

I have an eye condition that causes both corneas in my eyes to be misshapen. I feel for you. It sucks because it is difficult to get your vision corrected. There are options though. They have specialized contacts that will actually correct your vision even with corneal irregularities. I am not sure in what way your cornea is misshapen but look up keratoconus or ask your eye doctor about it and the contacts that are made to treat it. Also the other option though a little more extreme is corneal transplant. The eye condition I have is degenerative and while it stops progressing for most people in some small cases it progresses until the cornea bursts and requires transplants.

Corneal irregularities suck because even with glasses I see ghosted images all the time and light sources look like big smears. PM me if you want to talk about it or need any other information. I would hate for this one thing to stop you in your tracks.

Edit: I am a big baby and too scared to try contacts so I just use regular glasses and live with the visual aberrations that are not corrected by the lenses but my Dr. has talked to me and I have read about the special type of contacts.

I'm sorry to hear that, Zealot. I have scarring on my corneas due to chronic dry eyes which was constantly exacerbated by having a pollen allergy so there would be days where I'd be told due to infection that if I hadn't seen the doctors as soon as I had, I would've lost my eyesight.

It's calmed down a lot since I've moved from the NE but having chronic blepharitis ensures I'm never completely comfortable.

I would look into this. Really sucks to spend all that time waiting, but it might be a blessing in disguise.

I'm going to try and make the most of it. I'm going to file paperwork this week to become a candidate in a race for county council here. I'll explore every option I can; the CIA isn't a bad idea, but I'll also look into seeing if there are lenses out there that can help me meet the requirements and if they would let me try again.

Assuming it's the standard letter eye test with practice you can figure out letters pretty well even when it's not distinct and mostly a blob.

All my time in the navy and wasn't till I had like 1 year left in that they decided to look at my eyes because I could do 20/20 and even lower though had alot of difficult with one eye after it had been closed awhile. And when they did I got told they were football shaped and I needed to wear glasses. I laughed at them and they ordered me to wear them when they came in. Oddly they actually never delivered them
