If I own FF9 for the PSX should I bother buying for Steam or is emulator going to be a better idea?
Steam/Switch/ios versions have boosters that allows you to turn random encounters off, all abilities/magic on max, increase movement speed, max damage etc. If you are playing for the story they may help you reduce the grind.
there's a graphics mod that overhauls the game and crushes anything emulation can provide. it is staggering how much better it looks than the original.

also ye as Mayareira say some quality of life stuff that helps speed you through if you're just going storymode.
A few other items
https://store.steampowered.com/sub/368776/ - Historical low
https://store.steampowered.com/app/736260/Baba_Is_You/ - only 25%, but it's Baba Is You
Alright thanks my dudes, pulled the trigger on FF9. Been meaning to emulate a replay for years (and I seriously mean years).

GoG Spring Sale.
Flash Deals, though only two, up for 2 days. HoM&M 3 for .99 (so a further .50 from the other day, AG just can't catch a break.), and Wasteland Remastered for $4.50
Not flash, but something to consider, Divine Divinity & Beyond Divinity are .60 each, and Divinity 2 is $2. They are NOT Divinity Original Sin, but at that price...
For a laugh, you might also consider Larian's Waifu Simulator, Divinity: Dragon Commander.
Overcooked franchise sale, for when you really want to destroy your friendships.
