I'm up to the first cauldron in Horizon. Game is gorgeous on PS5, running smooth. Hair is wonky tho lol. Forgot how dense this open world was, but also how quick you can trek in on the map if you're booking it. Seems more manageable than I initially thought.

HZD in 2017, GoW 2018. Although really Marvel's Spider-Man in 2018 because I didn't play God of War until 2019 and it's probably better than anything else released that year.

    Hades for sure 2020.

Horizon was 2017? absolute banger of a year, BotW, NieR: Automata, Warhammer II Total War, Divinity Original Sin II, RE7, Persona 5, Edith Finch, Xcom 2 expansion, Hellblade, Hollow Knight, Mario Odyssey. might be the best year of gaming of me life.

Well as someone who just recently finished HZD I probably would have said 2017 GOTY but I don’t think it stacks up to God of War or Spiderman or Red Dead 2. Was Resident Evil 2 Remake in 2019? That was dope as fuck too. Shadowbringers also in 2019 though idk if it’s fair to compare that being an MMO expansion.

it's definitely the more impactful year but the nature of the beast results in vidya getting better, on average, as the years go by. can't with good conscience say a game like Starcraft is equal to strategy games that come out these days. don't even think it's close tbh.

some things never age of course, good writing is good writing, but a game like Resident Evil 2 was clearly surpassed by others in the series, and is clearly a worse experience than its own modern remake. Half Life is not as good as Half Life 2, Pokemon been surpassed by its sequels, same with Baldur's Gate and Gran Turismo, etc etc. something like Ocarina holds up quite well, and is arguably still the best Zelda game, but that is the exception not the rule.

it's a bit strange because books and plays and poems and music obviously don't suffer from this, neither do film or television except i suppose in the advance of CGI and not using blackface. but gaming is a newer artform and industry than the others and is fundamentally constrained by the tech of its time. thus i can say 1998 was the more important year, the more groundbreaking year, the more influential year, but can i say it was the better year in an absolute sense? nah man. not even close. it's rare a 1998 game will get play (tho i did play Ocarina and Xenogears this year ayy), but those 2017 bangers are all still absolute gold.

Film and television has been through these technological advances as well, but there have been fewer large tech upgrades. Silent to talkies, black and white to color, resolution upgrades, etc. Just like in games there are the few exceptions that stand out as "Classics", for storytelling (Dr. Strangelove, Gone with the Wind) or for technical advances (Matrix's bullet time scene, etc.)

    Edit:

And technically, you could consider film, tv, and games as technical advances to books as their popularity has waned. Hell, e-books vs paper books for that matter.

As someone who watched Enter the Dragon for the first time ever today. Couldn't disagree with this more. Was it a great movie? yeah. Did it suffer from being 50 years old? yeah. All forms of entertainment suffer from this shit. And I feel like you can't really take away from them just because they were a product of their time.

Anyway let's just all agree that Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross are the greatest games ever made. Humanity peaked in 2000. Goodnight.

but also it's pretty silly to pretend every medium suffers from this. as Bardicrune pointed out film does, to a lesser degree, as it is the second youngest mainstream medium and did see some transformative technological advances (mostly in its earlier years). but Shakespeare's writing wasn't limited by his quills nor Mozart's symphonies by his violins nor Renoir's paintings by his canvases.

again, there is a difference between judging a game in an absolute sense and acknowledging its influence and significance. in an absolute sense The Godfather is still arguably the greatest movie ever made. Pong came out the same year and while it could be called the most important game ever made (given its mainstream financial success) you'd be hard pressed to call it the greatest game ever made given its rudimentary nature which was the result of the technological limitations of its time. and i feel that applies to most games from 20 years ago.

but if you want to argue Pokemon Red and Blue was the best the series ever got go ham.

I mean the argument can be made for Brood War because the low QoL is directly related to a high skill ceiling, making it a fascinating game competitively even if it's a grind for normal people to play.

Which is like the equivalent of pointing out that dealing with archaic language is the price you pay for Shakespeare.

Only on BG will you get discussion like this.

Anyways, Lost Ember on sale, 70%/$9. With it's length, this approaches a reasonable price.

I love Chrono Cross to death but the universe in which it was created made it great, not so much the actual gameplay itself because the battle system was kind of a chore.

It's seriously a shame SE ain't do more with the series.
