3 was also a banger but I feel like went unheralded as it came out at the very end of the SNES lifespan and many had moved on to the N64 at that point. DK64 I remember being good but suffered from the same problem as Banjo-Kazooie where it made you collect a million different things for progression.
slow your roll son, the only thing Banjo-Kazooie suffered from was brilliance
One thing I did learn about the DKC series very recently was that David Wise redid the soundtrack for the GBA port of DKC3, due to not being satisfied with the hardware doing an adequate enough job to match the SNES compositions. It's mostly interesting to me since he took a backseat on composing when it came to DKC3's original SNES release, letting Eveline Fischer handle the majority.
That does make me curious how much CPU time you had to to burn to get audio mixes that sound like this though, as you're not doing this with regular use of the two sole channels GBA supports that can playback samples (SNES had 8 in comparison, and could apply effects to them, eg reverb). It's why a lot of GBA games used the legacy GB channels as a fallback to handle percussions or misc sound effects, just to free up the main melody to play off the samples as much as possible without interruption.
DK64's problem was the god damn tedium in having to revisit/backtrack locations to have to revisit them again as another Kong, because they couldn't be nice and give players a quick-select to deal with Kong-specific triggers.
Unrelated to current discussion, but man, 5070TI needs to come out already so I can actually stress test this year-old PC for real. I got a whole backlog of games I've been wanting to check out with the RT bells and whistles enabled, which will eventually include that recent Indiana Jones game, but no way in hell was I going to squander them by playing on low/medium on my old 1060, as amazing as a budget-friendly card its been. Easily my best bang-for-the-buck GPU since the 8800GT.
It's been a while since I've played either of those games but I think it was only notes, jiggies and maybe a world specific item for mumbo magic in B-K. DK64 character specific bananas or something, and a lot of backtracking to use characters to grab 1 thing. Also you had to beat the OG arcade game for the final boss token to beat the game. I think I gave up at that point. Sure it's only 4 stages but I didn't know that at the time and didn't feel like getting good at it to progress in the game I was supposed to be playing.
Just found out about pokerogue.net from somebody at work and damn is it addicting. I'm only on my 11th run, but I've had some pretty deep runs (165 being the furthest I've gone) and it's been a lot of fun. I'm enjoying how a lot the mechanics like IVs, eggs, and shinies work in this game. Makes/hatching catching the same Pokemon a little more exciting to see how it might upgrade your IVs as a starter Pokemon. I've always played Pokemon games pretty casually too, so I'm having to learn how to play the games with a bit more strategy and using buffs/recovery moves and not just picking all attack moves lol.
Highly recommend if you're a fan of Pokemon and rogue games.
I've been playing Romancing Saga 2, got to the final boss and I want to throw the game away, lol. The difficulty spike is ridiculous... I want to finish the game, but I feel the time I'd need to spent grinding just for that one fight to be a huge waste...
why no release thread BG-
Kingdom Come: Deliverance II getting a lot of 100s and 90+s but never beat the first one. might have to blow through it right quick to hop over.
also Civ VII is proving p divisive. still at an 81 at MC but that's lowest in the series for a mainline entry.
two of my biggest anticipateds of the year prolly gonna cave and buy both this week
I tried to enjoy it but the first Kingdom Come just never clicked with me.
Elder Scrolls without any of the fantasy elements when the fantasy stuff is what makes it fun is eh
Yeah I'm in the same boat. It's a hard pass for that kind of game not having fantasy elements.
my first bg3 playthrough has turned into “when lae’zel says jump i say how high”
pretty sure i killed a playable character for mommy’s approval
Finally went back and finished Yakuza: Like A Dragon after putting it off for almost three years. This was my first and so far only Yakuza game and it blows my mind how the main story can be deadly serious at times (Ichiban during the ending was insane) but the side story stuff is so off the wall absurd.
Anyways, might pick up Infinite Wealth and maybe the Pirate game in a few months.
This is par for the course for the Yakuza series and part of the reason I love them.
Speaking of backlog shit, hooked my PS3 up again and finished off MGR:Revengeance, the DLC for it, and started Anarchy Reigns.....to which I plowed through more than half that game in one sitting. Platinum does not make very long games, but damn they feel good to play. A shame Anarchy Reigns is one fucking ugly game on the technical side of things, got whiplash going from Revengeance being relatively clean and targeting 60fps, to a brown'n'bloom blurry blob that's sub native, barely holds 30fps, and LoD pop-in from a few feet away. Oddly enough it seems the online servers are still alive for it? Leaderboards still retrieve info and you're able to start up a lobby, so I might see about finding a group to smash each other in it some day.
Also to top off a testosterone-fueled weekend, I started Asura's Wrath.
Playing Lightning Returns for the first time ever. I have no idea how to even form an opinion on this. It's so different from the first two games in the series
I think this image best describes it.
Spoiler: show
God fucking damn the Sonic Frontiers boss themes go hard.
Pretty decent podcasting game since you're generally left to your own devices for hours at a time as you explore the maps. Been enjoying it other than its clear fault of pop-in out the ass and the repetition of some puzzles/encounters, and most of the platforming taking place in the sky. Stuff a sequel could easily address.
Spoiler: show
One of my fav combat engines in the series.
I'm playing it on the deck.
Best advice I can give is go on with an open mind and don't sweat the Ingame countdown. You have basically infinite time when you spam your time stop ability.
I cleared all the main quests on day 4. 9 days left to clear side quests.
I did the main quests blind, but I'm using a guide for sidewuest cleanup. There's a lot
